GM and Ford and Chrysler are all over the drama as they will try to benefit from it.

I wouldn't be surprised other issues get gigantic attention in the next few weeks.

 

I don't know why they think it is only related to the Prius, my Tacoma ABS system does exactly the same thing

 

I hope chevy and dodge come up with some big recall...Like throwing a rod or cracking blocks...Nothing for Ford tho...I love them.

AGREED. I hate the word conspiracy, but I almost think that the media is blowing this whole thing out of proportion for the american car manufacturers (and our own economy's) benefit.

 

Not true. 2nd Gen Tacomas have electronic throttle control. You will not find a direct cable link from the pedal to the throttle body.

 

My theory is............. the workers making the gas pedal assemblies at the CTS plant in Indiana are Howie Long relatives. I hate all of those GM commercials, especially the one with that can't talk for shit little red haired girl.

It seems like lots of people have gripes about the Tacoma ABS, but to me it seems like it's more of a problem with tires.

The ABS system will keep a wheel from locking up, that's it. It's a continuously variable feed-back system that uses an encoder on each wheel to detect if that wheel is locking up or not, if it is the system will bleed brake pressure from that wheel to reduce braking force and keep the wheel turning. If the wheel doesn't lock, the ABS doesn't do anything.

By nature, the ABS system cannot be overly "sensitive" ... it either sees wheel-lock or it doesn't. If you have better traction, the wheels won't be as apt to lock up and voila, no ABS intervention. Better traction comes from better tires.

People who complain that they skidded into an intersection because the ABS is too sensitive likely would have locked their wheels and skidded into an intersection without it, only they wouldn't have been able to control the direction of the vehicle with locked wheels. I'm not sure what these folks are looking for, to just let the wheels lock up a little bit before the ABS intervenes? It would be too late, as a slide would be initiated already.

 

yeah, driving that casket alone is scary. I hate small cars. I don't really think that my brakes giving out for one second is a huge concern for me as getting pile drived by some big azz truck on the road while strapped in that car.

My 2000 Ford Focus, voted Small Car of the Year, had 13 recalls over 4 years. THIRTEEN. That was just one model!

First week I had it, the throttle stuck wide open. It came from the factory with a bent bracket. I fixed that myself with a pair of pliers.

After 4 years, the front springs BROKE. Long story short, Focus was made in Europe first, with a lighter engine. The US version had a heavier engine, which made the front end squat. Their factory fix? Weld another circular link to the bottom of the front coil springs. Then cover that with a piece of rubber, like a sleeve. Well that weld breaks and your front end drops down and makes horrible noises. It took 3 calls to Ford headquarters for me to get them to admit that was a factory defect and fix it for free for me.

That's the last damned Ford I buy. Every Honda and Toyota I've ever owned (5) never had a single recall, even now.

The way I see it, the big 3 are pushing the media blitz on this to make themselves look better.

What you wrote was not entirely accurate. ABS systems can be calibrated through software to achieve different levels of sensitivity. Therefore one ABS system in a certain model of car/truck does not equate to the same ABS braking experience in another.

Moreover, sometimes auto manufactures will even revise the calibration for a specific model during production based on feedback from owners complaints.
