I did a 1k break in oil change on my own. I know tolerances are way better from back in the day but I was about to take my first Road trip in my truck and wanted to get a feel for the engine. There was a small amount of metal flake but so little the oil change was probably unnecessary. It made me feel better knowing that though. Now I'll go by Toyota's recommendation of every 10k.

Hey, if you want to go by what the Toyota automotive engineers and designers recommend go for it. I personally will follow the advice of random posters to an internet website and change my oil every 500 miles.

5k service is the sunshine treatment....if you're lucky they'll actually rotate your tires otherwise they just pop open the hood and let the sun shine on it for about 30 minutes then push you out the door

And I am deliriously happy automobiles require no more maintenance than that these days :bananadance:. I do not miss the good old days of constantly doing maintenance to keep my cars running.

I changed the oil & filter at 3500 miles after break-in. The oil was very clean and only slightly tan colored. I think it will be OK to service every 10K, but I might go to a 7500 mile interval.

Went in yesterday for a possible warranty issue with a little over 4100 miles on it. My service guy who is very cool said, "well we might as well do a service" complete oil change, tire rotation and safet inspection all done no charge. I was looking at my paperwork and it noted 7 quarts of oil. I had no idea they hold that much

Anyone who actually wants to know if 5k is too long or 10k is a waste of money should be sending their oil to Blackstone labs for analysis. Otherwise you are just guessing and might as well trust Toyota instead of some bullshit plan that your grandpappy used in the model T.

It's your money to squander, sure, but wouldn't you want to know for sure if that money wouldn't be better spent towards hookers and blow?
