I just recently found my self really liking to look of a Tacoma. I have curiosities and questions about the 2005 v6 and the 2016. not alot of horse power seperate the 2. my concerns are upgrades avalible. durability. and genral experiences an experienced taco driver has had. what to look for. what genrally wears out that's an easy fix. when I invest my money into one I want to know what to look for before I dive in. thanks for any feed back

I personally prefer the 2nd gen. over the 3rd gen. but that is just a personal preference. Easy fixes if you have the tools are oil, brakes, tires, both air filters (if equipped) and perhaps a belt or two if you are really willing to do some dirty work. I've had my 2015 for 4 months now and haven't had a single issue

I prefer to do all my own maitence. just go to the parts house and install my self. I'm not a mechanic. but I will do what I can. I'm intrested in the 2005 and 2016 taconas v6 4x4. and the older tundras that are smaller in size. If I can find one with 4.7 4x4 access or double cab I'm going to try and aquire it

Yea I try to do any work that I can myself too. I don't know much about the 4x4 from personal experience since mine is RWD. Id probably go for as close to the 4.0L as possible, the 2.7L is just silly and the 3.5L is better but I still would prefer a 4.0L. I'm all about double cab short beds too, sometimes the aclb and dclb can look odd without a lift of some sort

Be aware the 05 and some 06's are prone to head gasket problems.

Do you happen to know what the difference is between the v6 to the v8? has milage and power. I own a 3.2 v6 isuzu rodeo. 2002. And it basically has no get up a go horsepower. I don't do alot of towing and if I do its because someone broke down and I get the call to come rescue and tow them home. otherwise I was liking the idea of a small v8 with an intake/exhaust. slightly over sized tires and trying to figure out how to put a system in the thing. it's just me no wide or kids. it will be my daily driver and I do all my own maintence. Oil changes, spark plugs. . all the basic stuff. I just can't decide between the bigger horsepower v6 (2005/2016)or the 05 tundra 4 door v8 4x4.

if it were me, for a daily driver in your situation i would definitely go for a tacoma. for the year, it all depends on when you want repairs to start happening. obviously a '16 will have less problems as opposed to the '05. If you can find a '17 i would suggest that over the '16 too

Walked a dealership a couple days ago. the Tacos they had where 30k base. the n modded it started at 28k then with 12k of options added made it 40k. don't get me wrong the truck looked Dam good. but I found a tundra 4.7 4 door 4x4. 155k miles, 2005 for 9k. I'd like to get it. someone had done a few things to it. had after market wiring and a K&N intake. .

hmm depends on the area too, certain places charge higher. always shop around a lot before you settle for something you may not like in a year or two. When I went to get my taco, the list price was 30k online then when I got to the dealership found out it was more like 33-34K for the specific model and trim (XSP-X package). I talked them back down to 30k flat with just over 21k miles on it and with what I put down in cash they gave me the monthly price I wanted straight out. Went in for a test drive and left with a truck :bananadance:

from the pics seems like it is in awesome condition for an '05. one thing I noticed though was that they re-priced the truck multiple times, so if you're set on that one I would say you could probably offer a hard 7.5-8k and say since its been on the lot for a good time I'll take it but for this price and most dealerships can wiggle if its been there taking up space in their minds

I enjoy the barder and start with like 5cash. And let him counter with something. I'd try to walk with paying less than 7k. but thats having the cash to do so. . . not in that postion fhough

4.0 Tacoma Double cab long bed vs 4.7 Tundra double cab long bed... I drive both regularly.

The Tacoma has more updated looks and features, but has a slightly smaller feel inside than the Tundra.

Powerwise they are almost the same if the tundra is 2000-2004, 2005-2006 has the updated 4.7 and has a little more hp and tourqe along with a 5 speed vs the older tundras which don't have VVTi and have a 4 speed.

I can comfortable daily drive both as they feel the same size driving around to me.

If you want to tow/ haul heavier (<7000lbs) loads I'd get a clean 2005-2006 first gen Tundra, but to Offroad or just drive empty bed most of the time id look for a Tacoma.

Ok tacoma it is. how do I get performance out of it? the 2005 has better base HP. the 2016 have more hp. but its realistically out of my price range. And wich trim? what do the monikers mean. I did some reading and know the "prerunner" is a 2wd with 4wd stance. what does TRD and SR5 stand for in noob terms

SR5 refers to "trim package". Since there are never any SR models at any of the dealerships around me, it's a mystery what the diff is. Add to that there are over 20+ variations it gets confusing really quick.

Since it is so confusing (on purpose?), I always shoot for the price at or below the next mode/trim package/whatever below the one I'm looking at.

Sometimes knowing what you don't want or need is more important than whatever random package deal they offer. When I got my Tacoma, I knew I didn't want to spend $30,000. I wanted to be at or below the SR base price.

The TRD's I saw were all six cylinders and seemed to start at $35,000 and can climb over $40k real quick. I just didn't want to pay that much for a truck. Plus I have no plans to go off roading. I have a buddy that does this and it just destroys a car. To me it's like having a boat...nice to know someone who has one, but I don't want one. It's nice to go 4 wheelin/mud dobbing...but not with my ride.

    Hope this helps.

It's a good start thanks. where do I look for mods concerning the 2005 model? it's going to have a v6 so I know it's not a power house. but I want to make the truck get somewhere when I push the gas. does the engine come with decent performance or do I need to invest in the bolt on for a little more umph and gas milage
