So, as I noticed with my old 2002 Tacoma, the Climate Control faceplate has an amber tint to it. I want to convert my interior to LEDs, but I don't want to deal with the amber tint. Would it be possible to get Climate controls from a 1997 or so and put them in, instead of the ones that come with it? The cheapest I can find a 4runner faceplate for (which has no tint) is $65.

4runner plate is the only option I have ever seen.

01-04 are 3 knobs and digital. 00 and prior have a combination of knob/slide lever with a cable and are incompatible.

the only option is the face-plate (or whole unit as it's pretty much the same price)

Just curious but can the 98-00 unit be switched with a 01-04? (Plug n play)

Negative since 98-00 still has alot of mechanical controls where as the newer is all electronic basically...there are a few features that are quite different. I suppose if a guy was real savy ya might be able to rig it up to work somehow....maybe...but absolutely not plug n play like you asked.

    Still stock...
I looked into another option but finally decided it was easier to just wait and find a cheap 01-02 4Runner unit than try to rig something up with an older model 4Runner unit. It took me a while to find someone parting a 4Runner close enough to me who would sell the unit cheap enough but I finally found it. They go quick in salvage yards around me and are pricy on eBay.

would the 98-00 style swap into a 95-97? My levers are all gunked up from a previous owner's spill, I'm planning on cleaning everything out and figure if I'm in there it'd be much nicer to have the dials than sliders

I know they're different... I was wondering if the dials (98-00) actuated the vents using the same/a similar mechanism as the levers (95-97)

unfortunately my answer would still be no, the levers are manual and the dials are digital/resistors/actuators. you would need to transplant the motors and any corresponding ECU connectors (if any no clue) from the 98-00 into the 95-97. from these pictures I could find it may look like a cable on the 98 but only one of them and connected to the little motor inside. you have to take into account the "actuation" of the flapper and whether it is the same throughout the years or different, that could potentially throw off the indicator location :notsure:

Ahh okay, that makes more sense. I haven't been able to find an image that shows the cable from the dial.

Guess I'll just clean all the lever components and live with it

Thank you for answering/expanding upon my question. I really appreciate it, I'll just keep trying to find the faceplate from a 4runner.

I got the whole 4Runner HVAC unit from my local parts recycler for $40. I even switched out not just the face plate but the whole unit into my 04 Tacoma and works just the same. They didn't have any HVAC units at the yard where I live but they got one from a yard 2 1/2 hours away and had it shipped up to my location. LKQ corp. is the name of the place. They have locations across the country. Maybe try looking them up. GL! @dannyk35
