I have an 02 Prerunner with a 2.7L 3rz. From reading around, I read that it is safe to constantly hit the rev limiter because it is so underpowered. Is this true? I haven't tried it myself, but I would like to when I am offroading.:)

being underpowered has nothing to do with it. A rev limiter is in place to prevent damage. I definitely dont suggest running at redline for a lengthy amount of time.

Oh, I was just wondering. I didn't plan on doing any of that.

The strength of the 3RZ, and the fact that the rev limit is rather low mean that being on the limiter will not harm the engine. But wear is cummulative, and over time will accelerate the wearing out of the engine.

As others have said, I don't recommend spending much time at/near the redline but occasional bumps off the limiter aren't going to hurt anything. That's what the limiter is for - to prevent damage. Besides, the real usable power tapers off before 5.5k rpm anyway. I've heard stories about people abusing the 2.7L that made me cringe, seriously. Some race shops are building 1200hp drag motors with them. No I don't believe everything I read, but considering there are *so* many accounts of the toughness of these engines, mine will probably outlast the rest of the truck. 4-banger all the way. :)

for the record, 2.4 is more stout than the 2.7. Rod failures on the 2.7 when under boost.

Depends on the amount of boost. I ran 6 psi in mine for over 85k miles, with no issues.

Yeah true, cruzinlife over on CT blew two 3rz's both with rod failures. He had a killer setup too, no knock. I think he only pushed 9-12lbs... shit happens though!

The 2.7 does have forged rods. Crank too. Just not the pistons.

OK that makes sense, the 1200hp drag motors were using the stock crank, block and head. Everything else was replaced with hi-po stuff (valves, rods, pistons, cams, etc). Even the crank was shaved down for lower weight, and balanced.

you don't want to hit the limiter as it will cause premature wear
