I do not have one of these and have no first hand experience. Looks like it's powered via USB only. I wouldn't try to power it with anything below 5v 2A since spinny hard drives take quite a bit of power to spin up from standstill.

USB will be 5v.. for the extra amps, you could rig up your own cable to run power from a 5v 2A adapter and bypass the power from the Pioneer. That way you get power from the 5v 2A adapter and only have the data cable (green, usually) connected to the Pioneer.

so apparently the Seagate you showed me has a lithium battery built into it but I don't think it can run off the battery while plugged in. now are you talking about getting real fancy and open/splice the usb cable? cuz if I'm not mistaken the HD power and dater transfer thru the one cable. another problem is that I would have to reformat it to FAT12/16/32 in order for it to be recognized by the HU and they say the HD must remain in NTFS for it to work, if that's true or not I'm not sure. but in a positive not according to pioneer there are no limits to the size of HD I can plug in as long as its in the proper format. starting to look like I might have to just manually load songs onto a HD I can reformat

My wife bought it for me for my birthday in April. Probably in late April/early May, I charged it and threw it under my rear seat...I remember it took along time to charge; like 6 or 8 hours. I actually forgot all about it until today when I went out to go to the store and my battery was dead...click, click...click. I thought I would give it a try before jumping my Tacoma with another vehicle. Temperature was around 5F. Cranked right up.... as advertised!!! Still show's 3 bars (out of 4) on the charge scale.

    EDIT:
Battery was dead again this morning. Used the Halo Bolt again and it worked just fine. My battery was a Sears Diehard Gold 27F purchased in Jan 2015, had a 3-year warranty so I went back to Sears, they tested it and CCA was only @ 300+ so they replaced for N/C.

In the market for some retrofits. Really want a pair similar to this, debating on whether I should build them myself or have them done by somebody else. They don't look that diffult to do. What's y'all input?
