What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Really? Think about it. It would require new setup costs and a helluva lot of work. Have to replace the ARB in front and find diff donors of unknown condition. Also means disturbing the axles again in the rear. Naw, not worth the headaches.

Running 35s is just dequavian anyways.

I've laid down a bit of cash out there. I used to have one of his rear bumpers (our friend Ben has it now) and I still have his sliders and a custom bed rack he built me.

I have been thinking of going 4.88s. Do you think you would rather have 5.29s even with the 33s? Do you daily drive the truck? What kind of RPMs do you see at 70mph with the 4.88s.

At 70 MPH (GPS) 72 MPH (indicated) I am right at very comfortable 2500 RPMs and will typically see 19-21 highway MPGs.

Don't get me wrong, 488's are the right gear to use for DD. But mine no longer serves that duty. It is now strictly an adventure rig which means long highway drives to get to the destination, then a wide variety of trail riding conditions from fairly hardcore rock crawling to to high speed flogging on FS type mountain roads.

5.29s would be a bit too much even for an auto, if it's primarily a DD that is running 33s.

Yeah, they are a little rough around the edges.

They do great work tho.

4.88s will return the power band and shift points back to stock. If you have 4.10s now, with 4.88s it'll feel like it did with 31s.

Mine is a pretty fat bitch, especially when loaded for an adventure (~5600-5700 lbs.). If you are not running a lot of added weight, it'll feel pretty peppy.

Here is where I'm at .
1. I don't know where I would even get re geared in my area (could be solved )
2. Don't know what parts (could be solved )
3. I'm doing a prerunner to 4x4 swap so the re gear would only be for 1 transfer .
4. I will probably never wheel over aythong extreme (so is a 285 even worth it besides a little height and looks)
5. Regear is not something I have budgeted for . (But it could be )


So do I stick with 265/75/16? (Currently running 265/70/16

Or suffer a little on the 285's

I like my 285/75/16's but I rub my frame, lower gas mileage and slower acceleration. If i were to do it again I'd get something just as tall but skinnier.

 

I'd stick with 265/75 in that case. Can still do basically everything a 285 can do, stock gearing is fine for them, won't kill your gas mileage, and they look pretty good on the right rims/backspacing. Use the money for your 4x4 swap.
