Keep the 2nd generation, you will be glad you did.

I tow 18 ft flats boat, and sometimes have to use muddy lakefront ramp to go fishing with no problem. Hauling loads of sand and mulch in past plus a daily commuter is about it. Love the torque of 4.0 engine

How many miles on it? Any known problems? What will a new truck do your '13 won't, in terms of function, not amenities?

A 3rd generation truck will do nothing any better than 2nd generation mechanically. I own a 2012 trd off-road 4x4 with 65,000 miles and have had zero issues. I've driven 2016 Tacoma overnight and just didn't like the power train so I'm still driving 2012 and know I made the right decision.

Nothing,it's a much more refined engine than the 4.0. It boasts a higher HP number, but lacks torque. It makes all its power mid-high rpms. I understand why Toyota put it in,they already had it and it's obviously WAY cheaper to use an existing powerplant than develop a new one.

Right with you brother. I got a 12 baja and lucky for me the aesthetic of the 3rd gen front end turns me off. My 12 has been flawless with issues and was surprised to find out many of the early second gens experienced similar growing pains that the 3rd gens are experiencing now. In time the 3rd gens will be there, but you have the product of what the second gens went through to achieve with no more bugs. I know this sounds nuts, but you would have to pay me to even consider trading in my 12 for a 3rd gen as it gets everything done that I need. I am a simplistic guy though where I prefer the basics in the interior so alot of the interior upgrades I could do without...except the HIDs. So I modded my truck to have them!

I looked at the 16-17. Didn't like the engine or the transmission. Bought a 15 Sport. Love most of it.
Kazoo noise is annoying but the truck runs good and gets great mileage.
The engine uses a Atkinson-cycle which is IMO not a good thing for a truck. Ok for a prius.
All in the name of mileage for the gov.

If you are gonna get a gen 3, get a manual. At least the beefier rear-diff makes first gear feel like it has SOME torque.

I am toying with trading my 15 for a 17, the Service Dept damaged my Door Sill and offered to order me a 17 any way I want for Invoice, I do have the option to let the body shop repair my 15 though too.

I'm also thinking about going from a 15 DCLB to a 17 AC. I dont use the back seats like I thought I would and I find the wxtra 1' in legenth very inconvenient. But I'm a bit worried about the engine/transmission configuration in the 17.

Same here. The way I see it is that my '13 has been rock solid since day 1 with zero issues. If I traded it in on a 3rd gen and ended up having problems I would be pretty pissed at myself.

I toyed with trading... went in to get an oil filter and the dealer saw me looking at a 17 limited. Tried it out and loved it after the 15 min ride. Not much different ride quality wise from mine but more gizmos. Loved the power rear window and sunroof. They offered a great trade value but I would still be looking at a chunk of change to upgrade. Came back a few days later and tried it again but longer this time and focused on some highway driving. Was really put off by the power train. Interior is nice but doesn't feel as solid. Also feels a tad "plasticky". In any case, my 15 has been absolutely rock solid and although it doesn't have all the latest gizmos, it has everything I need and then some. I bought my truck to be a 10+ year truck and have absolutely no concerns that it will exceed my expectations. The GEN3, as is currently built, does not instill the same level of confidence. No even close actually. Maybe year 3 or 4 of the GEN3 will be there but I personally don't think so. The power train has become to complex. The 4.0 plus the 5 speed builds from 13 onward are bulletproof if cared for and well maintained. So mine stays and the mods/upgrades continue.

My 2013 has been perfect so far, I had a 2012 that got hit and totaled and i thought I would never be able to replace it I was wrong. I hope Toyota gets the third gen straightened out before I need a new truck.

I love my 2013 Limited. It is a solid reliable truck and with a proper truck motor. It's impressive how with a heavy trailer and over 600 lbs of tongue load, it will peel rubber through an intersection.
    Torque to spare!

I appreciate everyone's replies, I still have my '13, I've tried not to think about getting a' 17 since it seems everyone agrees, the '13 is most likely more dependable since all the bugs have been worked out. I still think about a '17 occasionally especially since my dealer has the exact color and configuration I want, all I would need would be Klazzio leather seat covers that would cost me an additional $2000 approximately. My truck is paid off and I usually like to trade up when my vehicles still worth a considerable amount, rather then pile up the mileage until it's not worth as much. I know Toyota has great resale, I just need to weigh the best time to trade in or see how many miles I can pile on!
