Radio shack hires just about anyone off the street, so no surprise there.

I would just google for electronics stores in your area. Otherwise, Radio Shack is your best bet. Maybe try going back in and hope a different person is working, or ask for a manager.

The "510" resistor is a 51 ohm resistor (first two digits represent the basic value, the last represents the number of zeros -- so 51 with no zeros behind it).

You can use a non-surface-mount (standard leaded) resistor if you need to, which is probably all you'll find at radio shack.

Custom body work...boat trailer came of hitch, hit tailgate and Rammed stick thru lower valance while towing boat....hmmm, Maybe I should get a new boat?!?
Just decided to fix the damn thing...Re-soldered all the little resistors as shown on the previous page. Worked very well...I am back knowing where I am going. Forums are the best source of information (good or bad!)

    Thanks,
    Brett

Thanks for the great advice. Found a hairline crack in a resistor. Soldered and it was fixed!

This is really easy to fix. You can get a soldering iron for about $15 at the Home Depot. The only thing I would add is this YouTube video to help you out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYaqARpTQmc

Just bought an 06 Prerunner and noticed on the drive home the temperature/compass gauge was not working! Damn! So I found this forum and it seems to be a pretty common problem. Well... 30 minutes after reading this post I had the console off and was soldering the hair-line cracks on two of the top resistors. Two globs of solder later and I plugged it in...it works- good as new! There were no burn marks on the board or around the resistors like some people had, just a single horizontal hair-line crack in the solder joint(had to really look close). The picture and advise from "45longcolt" is very helpful...thanks everyone for the advise...I'll be back I'm sure!

    Yes sir
Worked for mine as well, actually someone had already tried to solder it on but they used WAYYYYY too much solder. There was a huge gob of it that I had to heat up and take off. Then I re-soldered it on the right way, and boom! Orange light telling me where I'm headed and how hot it is outside. Thanks TW!

I've had my Taco since April and finally decided to look into fixing my compass/temp display. I pulled it all apart and thought for sure it was toast due to the black burnt spot on the led screen. I took it to a local hardware store, had a guy re-solder one of the 510 resistors and BAM! amber lights turn on and now I can see how bad I don't want to get out of the truck in this cold ass weather!
    Thanks for the help boys!
