question about drain plug bolt?

i changed my oil on my 2009 v6 4x4 access cab and i just noticed that there is not a washer on the drain plug bolt for the oil. i was wondering if there is supposed to be one on there or not? or is it one of those bolts were the head is bigger to make up for the washer? just wondering cause my 96 tacoma had a washer and now i am going crazy wondering if i lost the washer or if there was one even to begin with. so for stupid question but figures you guys would know. thanks

 

yeah.......they are supposed to have the fiber type washers on them.

should have got a new one with your new filter... if it was a toyota filter you replaced with.

Willing to bet its stuck to the oil pan. Don't fret it. They can be reused over and over without issue. I usually replace every 8-10 oil changes (if I think about it) and have never had a problem.

 

The ones I got from the dealer look like some sort of aluminum sandwiched between paper, the parts guy tried to charge me $2 and change and I flipped him a bunch of shit so he gave me 3 for like a buck.

The filter boxes looked like they had been opened and makes me wonder if they pull the washers out of the boxes before they sell them

 

+1. I remember when I did my first oil change on my truck. I had to pry that little sucker off the pan. At first I thought it was part of the pan until I put a flat head screwdriver to it and popped it off.

 

I replace my filter with Toyota OEM ones but dont ever remember seeing a washer in the box anywhere? I bought a bag of 10 washers off the internet.

 

I originally thought mine didn't come with one either but it turned out to be basically painted to the oil pan. Wouldn't come off with a screwdriver.

 

I didn't think mine had one at first but it was really stuck on the oil pan. It didn't come off until the third oil change.

 

Got a filter through the dealer and no washer. The washers are $1/3 as stated above. I just use Mobile 1 filters now anyways.

 

x2. It's recommended that you change it everytime, not sure why but it's a crush washer.

 

Yeah it is recommended every oil change. But since I only do about 2 to 3 oil changes per year, I just swap it out everytime.

 

Dump the bolt. I've been using these for maybe 20 years, on every vehicle I've owned. I've got no affiliation with them. Merely a recommendation. Changing the oil on the Tacoma takes only as long as it takes for the oil to run out. No muss, no fuss.
