Step 1 of My Lift Plan Didn't Work

The dealer installed my rear spring TSB yesterday and I picked up my truck last night. I also picked up my running boards and installed them this afternoon. While I was installing the running boards I checked out the dealers work and got a major surprise. They did not install the AAL; they installed a new leaf spring assembly P/N4821004550. I checked my ride height and it did not increase. I'm not happy.

I called the dealer and reminded them that the reason for bringing the truck in was because the back end was hitting the bump stops when loaded with 500 plus pounds. They ackowdedged my concern but said that Toyota is no longer installing the AAL. The new leaf spring assembly in a heavier duty version and is now the fix for both the rough ride and for the problem of the back end hitting the bump stops when properly to its capacity. They also said to let them know if I find this fix is not adequate. Here's a few pictures of the new assembly.





I'm supposed to get my 5100 shocks tomorrow and was planning to install them. The plan, however, was to set the front adjustable shocks to 1.75" to level out the truck. This assumed the rear TSB lifted the back end 1". I think I may go ahead and install the front shocks and set them as planned.

I called Downsouth Motorsports and verified my plan. I'm not going to mess with the dealer any longer. I went ahead and bought an AAL and I'll install it myself. They also said that the combination of the new heavier spring assembly and the AAL would lift the truck 1.5" and with the Bilsteins the ride would be ideal. I will get my 3 wheel alignment after the work is done.

I probably won't receive the AAL until Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. This will delay my install until next weekend. I'll report back then...

 

I'm getting my TSB work done on Saturday. I wonder what set up I'll get out here in Calif?

 

Bummer!!!!! I had exactly the same plan. Just got the Bilstein 5100 from Downsouth Motorsports (excellect customer service from Marco!) I just had the dealer order the parts for the TSB and I said I wanted the 4th leaf spring and he siad yes...mmmmm I am really interested to see what I get. I also wanted to set the front at 1.75 to level it.

 

Funny. I have the front and rear 5100s from Downsouth waiting in my living room as well, also set at 1.75. Was planning on installing as soon as I got back from the dealer. Hmmm. This could change things, I guess...

 

WPTaco, I'm very interested in seeing what you get also. Maybe what you get is subject to regional parts inventories. Maybe my dealer is unintentionally (or intentionally) full of it. I will say, the dealer I go to has been extraordinarily great to work with on all other issues.

Just got mine back today.. I got the 3/1 and did not get a lift at all, although the ride is better. As a matter of fact I measured the "loaner" 2010 prerunner and it had the same height as mine (before and after). Odd

 

If they don't give you 4 leaves-I would be VERY suspicious. Check part numbers and test the results.

I got a fresh set of 3 leaf springs the first time....No change in ride of capacity handling. Second time....Got 4.

Take it for what it's worth...

 

dude, those springs look flat as hell

 

so load the truck up, if it still sucks, go back with the weight in the truck and tell them you want the 4th leaf because you haul weight often. if you load it up, and in fact it is better, then buy an aal, I know you were hoping toyota would lift the rear of your truck for free, but they might have changed the way they are doing it.

 

Does the TSB mention a different replacement P/N now?

I think this is the answer- from looking at the spring they installed there is no way you'll be able to carry the rated load (too flat) and not bottom out. Somebody put stock Pre-Runner/ 4x4 springs on it instead of the TSB leafs (or they were shipped the wrong part and installed anyway). Go back with TSB in hand...

The part number you quoted is the ORIGINAL (weak) spring.

 

I understand what you are saying. I got the part number off a printed sticker that is still on the new leaf spring. In the morning I need to make sure that there wasn't an old and new part number on the sticker.

Are you thinking the correct TSB leaf spring assembly will look substancially different from the one on my original post?

Your U-bolt sure doesn't look new (op).

 

They don't look new which is another thing that pissed me off when I looked at what they did this afternoon. They are the same rusty U-bolts that were on my truck when I took it in.

All indications are that the dealer ordered and installed the wrong parts. There are stickers on the new leaf spring assemblies they installed and each sticker says the part number is the "previous part number" and not the "current part number".

I'm going back to the dealer this morning. I'm going to first go to the parts counter an get them to show me a picture of the "current part numbers". I'll then go to Service Manager, who by the way has been great to work with, and see what he thinks. Hopefully, he'll agree, order the correct parts and install them next week.

One question, if I get the correct 4 leaf assembly I still have the AAL on order from Downsouth Motorsports. Is there any value installing the AAL on the new 4 leaf assembly?

You'll get more lift from an AAL with the 4 leaf pack. My truck has a 7 leaf pack now....4-pack TSB and a 3-pack AAL from Wheelers (I left the over load in there).
