Ahh that makes more sense then! I'm not even sure if I will ever add a crawlbox or not I just mainly like to learn but it does sound like a very useful mod and something I should learn more about :)

If you buy an atlas then none of those rules apply. you just stuff the fucker in any gear range/ drive option you want (minuse FWD high range) and go to driving/wheeling.

i always drive around wheeling with 4.7. hardly ever go into compound low or even low with the fj case. after almost 5 years, still works and the world hasnt ended. also, i wish i hadnt done twin sticks since i would have 2 low with the crawl box.

Craig, this only applies to you 2nd Gen guys and your goofy non-manual stock transfer cases, right? (I'm kidding about the goofy part!) I'm wondering if the issue that @James at Lowrange described is applicable to 1st Gen J-shift cases as well, because I fully intend to keep my J-shift in the mix.

What i'm talking about applies to anything. Even with 2.28s in the crawl box running crawl box in low and rear case in high is really hard on the input shaft of rear case.. Mild wheeling is no issue.. Some guys get away with it .. Other guys break stuff .

This is mine.. 2.28 crawl box in low.. Gear rear case in high.. Now this is a old style ( known to fail) tg 21 spline .. but my buggy is only 3000 lbs . I did deserve to break this I was hitting a rock wall/bowl / waterfall at about 20 mph in the snow :)

Smart driving and you can keep it together no problem. I just tend to make bad choices.

    http://www.lowrangeoffroad.com/toyo...hwormgear/built-tacoma-double-case-setup.html

In the details section we talk about the 4.7s in the crawl box

One of the biggest things that takes out t cases is big tires with out re-gearing the axles .

This is what I'm trying to avoid by going with the Marlin gears, they don't "neck down," 23 spl options, and have the option to upgrade to chromo.
I do plan on cruising with the 4.7s as the primary gear reduction, taking advantage of the deeper gearing and engine braking for downhill with an auto.

Diffs are geared accordingly, so i'm hoping that will help out as well.

But totally agree the additional stress put on the tcases without the diff regear will be only a matter of time before failure.

    Thanks, fellas!

For reference, I'm running 315s with 5.29s and IFS for the time being. Not a hardcore crawler by any means; mostly looking to have a slower speed available rather than skinny pedal up everything. Because my truck is more expo oriented, the crawl box is there more for its availability in case shit gets hectic out in the sticks.

It sounds like neither of you should have any issues.. I've been thinking about ditching my dual gear drivens w/ 4.7 rear and doing a 4.7 crawl box in front of a fj case. And swapping my Hybrid 9.5 fj80 front axle for a Ford high pinion dana 60 someday.

Atlas would be sick but 3500$ for the 4 speed is a lot. Especially when I gotta convert that in to Canadian

It's not cheap any way you do it but remember cheap ain't bad ass and bad ass ain't cheap.

I'm glad i spend the money on on atlas 4 speed because when it came time to break it wasn't and expensive tcase that would leave me stranded in 4 foot of snow where i would have to leave my truck still spring.

That's some deep ass snow. I think the 4 speed would be overkill for me but I would know I'd never break it that's for sure

My 4.7 TacoBox is in my possession! Marlin took awhile, but he got it here eventually.

Probably won't attack all of this until the fall of next year, as the funds I had set aside for my drive lines, crossmember, etc. got siphoned off to other things while I was waiting for this. That's fine though. I have a million other things to wrap up over the winter to have my rig ready to rock for spring and summer trips.
