My 2007 taco sr5 prerunner v6 limited slip/towing package was stolen yesterday. LOVED that truck, bought it new and planned to keep it. Now I have to replace it, with what little I'll receive from the insurance company, plus a LOT from my pocket. A lot has changed in 10 years, so I'd appreciate some fast education. So far, my research indicates that these axioms have not changed:
    • Resale is so good on the late models that "for a few dollars more," a new one is probably the way to go (same as in the past).
    • Most everyone wants the 4-door; far more common, and probably holds resale better.
    • If in doubt, get the 4x4. Better resale, especially outside the South.
    • There is not much wiggle room off MSRP. Dealers can move these all day within $500 of retail.
What's my problem? Trying to wrap my head around spending $35+ to replace what I had and was happy with. I'll drive this new truck for ~10 yrs/200kmiles. I work from home, so rack up low annual miles.

    My questions are:
    • Are my assessments accurate? What have I missed?
    • What would YOU guys do? Bite the bullet and spend the wad, knowing I'll get many happy years from a brand new one? Or search for a preowned cherry that is old enough to come at a substantially lower price? In other words, LOVE the truck/HATE the price, or LIKE the truck/LOVE the price?
    • I REALLY prefer the half rear doors ("access cab"), and was happy with them on my 2007. Should I learn to like the 4-door now?
I don't have much decision time. Thanks for your input! This is a terrific forum, full of great, helpful members!

Go to the thread about what people are paying for 2017's and read a little
    bit .

Get whatever truck you want/afford. If you plan on having a truck for 10 years and 200k miles I wouldn't worry much about resale. Most people are getting about $3000 off MSRP but after taxes title tags and fees end up paying MSRP out the door. I love the truck and think the prices are competitive for what it is.

I love my Gen 3. My opinion is if you keep your trucks 10 years or more, get what you like and want. Don't make yourself try to like 4 doors for 10 years if you don't need them or don't like them. Same deal with 4x4.

Definitely test drive the Gen 3 before you decide. Some people don't like the shifting of the AT. Mine is fine.

    Happy shopping and good luck.

Think about a good used one too. Not sure wehre you live but if you can get by with 2WD that may help.

If you're looking for another long term keeper, I'd just test some new ones and see if they suit your tastes, expectations, and enjoyment. I went new because resale on used is crazy and I'm keeping this one for a long time. I too wanted only access cab, so I negotiated the OTD price and placed my 'order' and got what I wanted a couple weeks later. If you don't want the double cab, don't settle for what you don't want when you're forking out 30k +, get what you really want. If you don't like the new ones, find a used one at a price that is reasonable. But whatever you decide, make sure you like it!!
