    What do you all think?

My driver's side axle shaft, 71,116 miles. Only lifted since 55,000.

Damage was caused by Toyota needle bearing.

I dunno if I should run it, or replace.

ECGS Bushing was installed today. I question the beat up shaft though. I might try and get in touch with Chase.

Probably not ideal to run it now that the surface isn't smooth. Maybe keep it as a spare.

I've seen worse. If you aren't seeing oil on the floor where you park, I'd run it.

Found this for comparison. Mine looks a lot worse, IMO

I wouldn't run that. Looks to be some pretty deep brinnelling, your fingernail catches the lines very easily, doesn't it? Looks like the hard surfacing is totally flaked away in a few small places.

I have nothing to add other than to say "bummer". If it was me I'd be inclined to just get a new CV at that mileage given the scoring but that isn't based on any sound technical or mechanical knowledge. More that I don't like having things apart twice. You are way more handy and hands on with your rig than me though.

Also I hadn't considered needle bearing damage to the CV happening but now feeling good I just went ahead and had ECGS bushing installed at the same time as the lift. Benefit of being late to the 2nd gen party with a 2015 is this was a really well known issue with a good fix available for me right from the get go.

Hope you get it all back together soon. Look forward to the details in your build thread.

The only thing that will effect is the seal.
The factory half shafts and CV joints are higher quality than aftermarket. Replace it with an aftermarket half shaft, then you risk having to replace it because of a blown CV. OEM half shafts are 3x the cost of after market.

Might as well run it to failure, you will be money ahead.

This is not something that will leave you stranded.

If you see oil on the floor, then plan on replacing.

I don't know what you are looking at, but the brinnelling on the bearing surface of the CV stub is nowhere near the seal.

I agree the slight wear on the sealing surface is negligible, and could easily be polished with some fine emery cloth, but that isn't the topic as I'm understanding it.

    Lets back up.

Have you replaced the needle bearing with a bushing? That bearing is what causes the vibration. The bushing gets rid of the vibration.

If you still have a bearing, Then run it.

LF is correct, I did not see the odd wear in the shaft until I blew up the pic on my computer. My potato phone is pretty scratched.

I still would run it, regardless of new bushing or not.

I agree the factory shafts are better than the aftermarket. As I understand it, you can get a factory reman from CVJ if so I would go that route, or buy a junkyard shaft. That is one of the rougher CV's I have seen. Since it is out I would replace. Thanks, Chase

Correct me if im wrong, but mine looks just as bad. Looking for a new cv unless somebody stops me soon. It was shaking like a sumbish at 150k, 2.5" lift at 70k

Welcome to TW. Yeah I'd replace that. Do the ECGS bushing too if you can.

If it were me, I'd polish it up with some very fine emery cloth and reuse it. But, that's me.
