It is the 10% that really makes the difference; the difference between cob-job and quality conversion. The details can't be forgotten or shortcut.

Honestly, screw the FMIC just chop a hole in the hood. Great build and you really make it seem easy.

I'm taking the scoop into consideration. But right now it's so cold out that I'm just going to drive it till I get motivation to do a bunch of body work.

It really is the 10% that makes the difference. That's why I take time to use solder, heat shrink, proper rustproofing, torquing fasteners to spec, etc. This build isn't immaculate, but it sure will be solid mechanically and hold up to some harsh use. I'm sure I messed up on something, but that's what road testing is for right?

yup. also, while the fact that it sounds like an old drag car idling is fucking awesome, are you sure its supposed to do that?

I noticed that too, is it supposed to sound like that? It sounds like an old riding lawn mower or one of those old beat up muscle cars. I was expecting more of a ford v8 Triton superduty diesel sort of sound.

When I turbocharged my 3b in my 70 series Land Cruiser I chopped a wrx intercooler and modified it for the engine, made a scoop and cut a hole in the head. All the piping and mods for the FMIC were just not worth it imho. As an alternative you can certainly do a top mount water to air intercooler setup. I thought about the w2a but it was just more complexity to a simple problem and for me the scoop and hole doesn't bother me.

I still need to make a spacer for the center of the scoop and some cleanup but all in all I am very happy. Used 16g steel as I did not want a piece of rounded fiberglass on my very square and basic truck. Overall in hot driving it lowered my driving temps ~10 degrees v non intercooled without scoop. YMMV

pretty sure the exhaust is not on yet so it's not routing through any dampening or back pressure. Once he gets it made (from previous post he's in the process) it will smooth out for you Cummins/Powerstroke fans :D

I so want to do this but can't justify removing the 3.4 until it goes :(

Keep in mind that the video is a cold start on a brand new motor. Pretty much all diesels sound crazy at those cold of temperatures. Just YouTube "diesel cold start" and you'll see what I mean. It runs nice and smooth now.

Yes I'll keep that in mind.

Update is that I drove the truck around today and promptly blew something up in the power steering system, spraying fluid all over the engine bay. I'll diagnose later but the truck indeed runs and drives.

List of things to do now:
    Fix power steering
Figure out why the tach doesn't work
Figure out why the glow plug indicator light doesn't work
Figure out why the 4WD system has a mind of it's own
    Put interior back together
    Weld downpipe and exhaust

    ROLL COAL

meh, i like it, just concerned me as that normally only happens with retarded overlap cam grinds or bad tuning.

right, i was thinking it was at least 50*F or so in there because garage, i guess not.

Last night, I was able to ghetto-bend the old 5VZ high pressure power steering hose and replace the leaking 3RZ hose that I was using on there. She's got 50 miles on her so far! For break in, I'm just trying to vary the load and keep out of wide open throttle for the first 1000 miles or so.

Here's some more videos. Yes I know the tach doesn't do anything and I'm working on it.

I also got around to putting in some indicator lights. Here's the light for the water-in-fuel warning. I know the duramax sensor is flaky but at least the provisions are installed for a better sensor in the future.

Truck sounds so awesome! I can't even imagine replicating the amount of work you've put into this :hattip:

Question, in the 2nd video your air filter looks to be very wet. Is the camera playing a trick on me? Otherwise you may want to invest in a "hydro shield" pre-filter or a housing for the filter.

Can really hear that turbo slicing the air. Mmmmm.

What kind of muffler/s do you have planned? I am really curious to hear the finished product to compare.

It was super wet! (just washed engine bay) All that crap is getting thrown away though when I put in a 5VZ airbox and plumb that in. Nice and stock.

We'll see, but most likely a straight pipe. It really isn't that loud with all the restriction from the turbo.

I thought it would be okay with a straight pipe after throwing the turbo on my 3b so I ran 2.5" straight out the back. Well, a couple months later I bought a high flow 2.5" magnaflow for it, ymmv. Truck sounds good man, props
