Picking a college major

Im 17 and tryin to figure out to do with my life and ill be going to college in the fall, so ive narrowed it down to either a Lineman, Welder, or a job in Sports Turf Management. Has anyone had any experience with any of these jobs???

 

If you already have it narrowed down to three you are way ahead of the game. Just try and pick something that will keep your interest. You can always take a variety of classes to see what might spark an interest.

 

Take your basics your first year. Get a grasp of all careers you are interested in before you start to focus on your major.

Don't be a double major,

Business Adminstration w/ concentration in Management
Accounting

its painful.

 

My cousin is currently going to school for underwater welding. Sounds pretty badass when he is describing the classes and career options he has. Just throwing that out there. And it's only a two year college and he will be able to make around 70k at a entry level welders position.

If you like the outdoors, look into Adventure education. You learn everything about the outdoors.

 

for the first two years take a wide variety of classes, but dont neglect your cores. When the time comes, you will hear your calling

 

There's a good chance that no matter what you pick, you'll change your major. There is some sort of stat that people change their major 3 times before graduation. I did.

If it matters... I wasn't going to go to college - I was an 'artist' working in graphic design. Then I went to college thinking I would get a degree in fine arts or architecture. I then started hanging with some guys that were flying planes and studying to be airframe/power-plant mechanics. I then switched to aeronautics - then all the air traffic controllers got laid off and finished off in areo/mechanical engr. Went to work for McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) and they paid for my MBA with an emphasis in Investments.

Like Mr Bullet says - follow what you love, develop your interests and you will end up happy and satisfied. I would also suggest talking with people that enjoy those jobs - ask them what they like about it, etc. If you are talking about football - I work with a great woman who's husband has a number of Superbowl rings (man those things are HUGE!!!) and recruits for a particular NFL team that I would be more than willing to expose you to if it helps you with your decision.

Regarding a Lineman position - I take it you mean power lines. If you want to talk with a good guy that has had a career doing that, pm me. I have a good friend that would be more than willing to talk with you about that.

I was going for a degree in computer and networking till I went to an interview for an internship and after seeing them staring at a computer screen in a dark room, I changed right then. I know all IT jobs ain't like this but it just hit me that I wasn't intrested. So even me with almost with 2 years of school outta of the way for a computer degree changed my mind. I am now in instrumentation and control automation and in my last semester. I'm happy I changed. Sometimes like the guy above wrote you end up changing your mind and it's ok to do so. I agree with everybody else, take some core classes like english math etc that all degrees with have and talk to people about what there doing and what's avaiable. I didn't even know what instrumention and control automation was. (Working with instrument that measure pressure, temp. etc. and PLC's and caliabration) I'm also an outdoor guy believe it or not. Forestry would also be a good field for outdoor jobs, although i don't know how hard it would be to get one. I hope to work for the local power company someday, Lord willing. Enjoy college and do what you would be happy doing.
