Just shipped a R150F and a W56C back to their owners after rebuilds (side jobs). Toyota manual transmission are designed to work on IMHO but they are also built to last. Maybe some day I will..

 

I've been driving a stick for 31 years and of course bought a Taco with one in it. I like how it keeps me involved in driving. You know how fast you are going by what gear you are in and feel more in control/touch with the vehicle by that 3rd pedal.

The other day someone said 'i can shift my auto if I want" Yes you can but a manual is more about the clutch engagement to me than moving the shifter.

 

If Toyota ever stops making manuals, I'm switching back to Frontier.

 

Odds are Nissan STILL wont have updated the Fronty by the time Toyota stops making manuals. I just wish they had gotten stuck on the D22, I'd have bought one of those over the Tacoma new any day of the week.

 

I've been driving for almost 40 years. Learned by sneaking the Sunday school church bus out, an old Bluebird with a manual. I've only owned 12 vehicles in that time (I tend to buy something I like and then keep it a long time), and in all that time I've only owned one AT. My first three were muscle cars, and all but one of the rest were either PUs or sports cars. The one exception was when I moved and needed something cheap and immediately, and picked up a econobox with an AT to get back and forth to work. It got me from here to there, but that was it. That lasted 6 months until I could get my Miata, which I still own and have used as my daily driver in South Florida traffic for the last 17 years (with a stage 2 clutch - tell me again how I won't be able to stand a manual in stop-and-go traffic?).

I recently decided I needed another vehicle, since the Miata, at 200K, was ready for some downtime and some restoration, and I wanted another truck. Finding a used MT Toyota with low miles at a decent price was not an easy task. I was tempted a couple of times to just bite the bullet and get an AT, but I'm glad I waited. Finally found my 2005 X-Runner, which I am loving (and will more so once my Hurst SS gets here). Had to drive to the other side of the state to get it, but it was worth it. MTs forever!

I have never owned an Automatic. Learned to drive in a 63 VW Beetle back in 1969. Since then a bunch of different Beetles andDunebuggies. Onto a 74 FJ40 with a threespeed non syncro 1st. Gutless and a Pig to shift so dropped in a 350 chev with a Ford Toploader 4 speed behind it. Great little Tranny and awesome setup. Then moved on to a couple Toy P/Ups. An 81 then to an 85. The last great solid axle front end in the minitruck. Drove that 85 for a lot of years cause hated to have to downgrade to an IFS. Then for some reason switched over to Rangers. Also great little offroad trucks in the manual 5 speed configuration. Last one being a 97 B-4000. 334,000 K of trouble free Wheelin. Just gettinjg a little long in the tooth for me to trust her on the longer bush trips when your 200 miles from anywhere. Which is very easy to do here in BC. So finally broke down and bought my current ride. Has been excellent to drive, and the best of the bunch of Trucks that I have owned. Also has by far the nicest shifting manual tranny in a truck, that I have had the extreme pleasure of driving. Almost shifts itself it seems so smooth. No matter whether up or down shifting. I've driven my neighbours 2016 Taco slushbucket. Smartest move I made was to get the Manual.

 

I still miss my 96 manual honda accord. Her name was Maria. Hakkepeliitas on a front wheel drive with manual makes for super fun winters.

 

i bought my Tacoma to replace my '06 Subie, 2.5NA motor with a 5MT and just 2800lbs to throw around, sooo much fun. i just replaced the steering rack, tie rods, ball joints, shifter bits, and a new windshield. now i need to have it detailed which means it's time to sell.

NNNOOOOOOOO!!!!! thinking cold dead hands here. can't justify keeping it though, although i'll only get $7-8k for it.

 

I remember that stage, just couldn't afford to keep it. In hind sight it was just money and I could have gotten through it and would still be having fun with her.

 

i have entertained the idea for sure. keeping the car is a good idea for a few reasons, and i've put a lot into it (new valvetrain, new clutch, etc etc). but my kids have more than 10 years before driving, my wife and i have 2 new vehicles, and the killer is insurance.

it's all about the insurance, otherwise i'd keep her. and then i'd be asking myself what i'm doing with the Taco. lol the Subie is endless fun with the 5 speed and the light motor with plenty of low torque, which i'm missing in the Taco like everyone else around here.

Unfortunately I do. Manual transmission trucks today are almost insignificant, hardly worth the bother adapting the assembly line. Automatics are already more efficient. Computer controlled collision avoidance is here now and will likely be mandatory in coming years. Get one while you can.

 

Hi guys, new here after some time lurking. Don't actually have my Taco yet, but have figured out that the one I want is only sold in Canada. That would be an Access Cab Off-Road 4X4 with the manual trans. Has anyone successfully imported one?

 

If I'm not mistaken, the configuration you are looking for HAS been available at times. The website is not indicative of the only configurations that have and/or will be has/been made or seen in the area you are currently in.

 

3rd gens manuals are not available in TRD OR access cab in the US.

 

That's precisely the truck I want as well. Last year I contacted Toyota via Email asking if they thought it could be coming for 2017 and was told they didn't know but would "forward my request to the appropriate people". When I followed up that I may just pick one up in Canada, Toyota replied they strongly discourage doing so for warranty and recall reasons. Also I'm not sure how involved it would be to convert the speedo to mph? Or can that be done in the settings? At the time our exchange rate was very favorable and even allowing for something like 10% Provincial tax and their national tax it was still a little less money.

Just last week I contacted Toyota again and basically received the same response. Maybe if more people contacted them they would offer this?

Please let me know if you ever find this to be the case but both responses from Toyota and my dealer confirmed otherwise. In my enquiry last week I said I'm in no hurry I can wait for a few months suggesting they offer this configuration on limited runs say twice each year.
