When I was ready to buy I used this site to search inventory around my area.

    https://www.cargurus.com/

Turns out the closest Toyota dealer had a Tacoma on their lot exactly the way I would have ordered it.

It depends on the package you order. Mine was a QS DCLB Offroad with no additional tech and from order to delivery took almost exactly 2 months.

From my experience the best way to get the exact car you are looking for is not to "order" it, which is a crap shoot on how long it will take to arrive.

Instead, go to cars.com and search for the model/colors/packages you are looking for and there should be at least a few within the US. Then you can shop the car against every dealer that has it to get the lowest price. Shipping the car from anywhere in the country should be no more than $700 - $1500. You should be able to save that much at least by shopping every dealer that has it. Especially if you are located in the South East where SET has a monopoly and the prices are marked up extremely high.

2 week process instead of potentially months. Plus you will probably save money.

That totally works, but of course the truck you want has to be in stock somewhere (mine wasn't for awhile).

If OP has the time, I would recommend buying a one-way plane ticket and driving the truck home as an option. To avoid the freight cost if that is screwing up the deal. I think $1K in freight would have ruined my good deal on a special "order". Point being, be flexible, try all options and see what works out best.

Took about a month for my Inferno TRD off-road access cab. I ordered it in early March and I picked it up the day after my b-day in April.

I did that on my last 2 Trucks and my dealer did a trade. This time however that cannot find a manual trans OR within a reasonable distance and will order the one i want at invoice.

Ordered my DCSB Sport 6MT 3/18, sat in the queue until 4/10 when it got "picked up / assigned a build date" of mid-May and was delivered 6/2. As I understand my broker placed 3 orders the same day as mine, the A/T's got picked up immediately, but my manual sat in the queue for almost a month before getting picked up and assigned a build slot.

It took about 2 months for me to get my truck, from the day I placed the order to the day I picked it up.

I was lucky because my salesman saw the same model truck I wanted in the inventory pipeline and then he requested a color change (and had some options removed/added to get me exactly what I wanted). Other dealers will just wait for the exact truck to show up in allocation to sell which will take longer for you to get, but easier work for them. If my salesman didn't do the color change request, it would have taken and extra 4-6 week to get my truck.

Thanks for all the input guys, I appreciate it! If I do go forward with the order and it takes a few months then it will miss the shitty Winter weather.

About 6 weeks for me. I did not want to compromise on anything... "color, factory bed cover, trd off road, jbl/moonroof, tow" Other things can be added. I think its worth it to get exactly what you want... vice compromising. Good luck!

Getting exactly what you want and knowing the truck was made specifically for you makes all the waiting worth it. My truck had 4 miles on it when I took it for the official test drive before taking delivery.
