Indeed, fellow Wichitan here. Sucks to hear this happen to a fellow TW member. I've seen reports going around on the local news: http://www.kwch.com/content/news/Thieves-use-dangerous-trick-to-steal-gas-405361706.html

Is that quote via Eddy's? I hate that place. My last service at 25K is right around the corner and I'll be gone after that. Wish we had an alternative closer to Wichita.

Hope you're not down too long, but with them I wouldn't hold my breath. Took over a week to replace my leaf springs.

    Risk:
    A. Burning alive in a gas-soaked fire ball caused by arcing in the drill motor
    B. Jail time for theft
    C. Death or a serious beatdown by an over zealous vehicle owner

    Benefit:
$10 - $50 in gas of an unknown age/ water content.

Yeah, the thieves really did the math on this one.

Or...... fix the $40k truck correctly with a new tank. You don't mess with gasoline. $500 isn't so bad compared to what a fuel leak could mean to your garage/house/life.

Yeah, most people who have no idea how to work on machines think like that.

There is a putty designed to plug leaks in a gas tank. I can't remember who makes it, but it is similar to JB weld, only gasoline rated.
And to those talking about the drill sparks, I am not saying the thieves thought this through, but a brushless drill does not spark.

Yeah, doing things correctly is for morons.

There is a reason Toyota or a reputable shop won't magyver a fix on a fuel tank.

If you're doing it right a repair is fine. Same thing could be said for changing your own brakes... if you're not capable of doing it right you pay someone. If you have the tools, know-how and materials you can do it right.

Yea so far for service they have been fine. Bought the truck in Kansas City as not to even give them any of my business when they really did a shitty job on my frame replacement on my 2nd Gen. Since Wichita is not that far away from San Antonio, I bet they get in stock parts petty quick. They had me up in 2 business days. I think when it comes to warranty work, dealers drag ass, but when they are getting paid by customers they are qick to get the job done so they can take your money.

Had the tank replaced, since it was already at the dealer and out of gas, would have been too much a pain in the ass, since I am pretty busy right now. But if it happens again, I will plug it. Installed some security lights hopefully to scare them away if they come back. But in 7 years I have never had any issues, looks to be more of a random thing.
In one of the other neighborhoods this summer, high school kids were knifing tires and smashing windows out for the hell of it. They did catch them, probably for the kids safety, some owners might have caused those kids to go missing..............

They weren't messing around on that one.
I couldn't imagine 20 gallons of gas pouring out of a 2 inch hole.
