RR Locking Diff Question

I just bought my first Tacoma. Its an 2010 double cab TRD off road. I was reading in the owners manual about the locking rear differential but it didn't say much on it. Now comes my dumb question. I was sitting in the truck today, in park and I pushed the button. The light started blinking just like the book said it would but it never stopped. Do I have to be moving before it engages? I'm very new to the Tacoma but I love it already. Any help you all can give me would be greatly appreciated.

 

You must engage/disengaged below 3mph. When it's new it has a bit more difficulty engaging, to do this pop the button at a dead stop (or at least under 3mph). To help it out, turn the wheels left and right while slowly moving forward. Eventually it'll click in and the light will turn solid. At first, it'll probably be a pretty audible click/clunk and you'll know, over time it'll kinda break in and be snappier and less noticeable of a transition.

Note, only use the locking diff on loose terrain, aka not asphalt/concrete. Dirt, sand, mud... all fair game. The speed limit in the book is posted for safety reasons in the behavior of turning/emergency maneuver driving... not because the truck will break if you do 70 with it locked.

Were you in 4L.

You have to be.

It helps to crawl forward or back with a slight turn as well. Practice it a bunch, it will lock faster.

 

when in 4L put ur vehicle in Neutral, press RR Diff lock than go to Drive, should work than

Yes you should have written the whole manual. Is it just me or does it not do a very good job of explaining anything? Thank you all for the answers. I got it to engage today with no problem. I must say that I have only had my truck since Tuesday and I already love it. Its not my first truck but it is my first Tacoma. Thanks again everybody

FWIW ... I have a 4x2 TRD, OR and did the same thing when I first got mine. That rear locker on a 4x2 is neat.

I hit the "R Locker Button" that is close to "Fog Light Button". Nothing blew up and that was 10k miles ago.

I know 10Prerunner is a 2WD, but since the manual is so poorly written... and 4WD owners are reading this... Here is my signature for the drive modes and how to activate for those with 4WD Off Road TRDs...

 

do the older models make you stay in 4Lo, I have a 4runner 97 with it as well as the taco and i normally clicked it and it worked in 4hi

 

I don't have a clue about the rear locker before 2001... Just because you 'clicked' it, doesn't make it work. I can 'click' my RR Locker switch and the indicator light blinks... in H2 or H4. But, all 3 of my Tacomas ('01, '05, '10) only when in 'L4' would the light stop blinking and stay on... indicating the rear was locked.
