    Hi guys, I'm new here.

I'm in the market for a 2017 TRD OR and I'm wondering if I should build one or buy from a dealership? There's a dealership that has what I want, except that it has step bars on it and they won't take them off and reduce the price proportionally. Furthermore, the price is at MRSP, and they appear to be unwilling to budge.

If I build, what's that process like and how long can I anticipate waiting? Much thanks in advance.

I don't know where you're located? I've heard it's hard to negotiate on Tacos in CA. But I think most other places will budge on the OR. Shop around and if you don't mind going out from local area you'll probably find what you're looking for at below sticker.

I'm in Oklahoma. I thought a reasonable offer was $34500 for the TRD OR. Thoughts?

I built. I was picky about certain features (paint, JBL, tow package) and couldn't find one that was exact. The dealer I used was seamless. They had to get an allocation and the actual build was pretty quick. Total waiting time was 2 months. I was patient and wasn't in a rush. I don't regret building one bit. I got exactly what I wanted (although I sometimes regret not getting the roof rack). I am in Seattle area.

Also, I negotiated price before choosing to build (because they couldn't get any including a couple in transit).

I thought that the dealer would be more motivated to come down on the price given my "threat" to build. I assumed he'd want to move one off his lot.

What's the sticker on it? If they don't budge from sticker then find another dealership. It's end of year and you should def be able to get a decent deal on a OR.

The "internet price" = $36000 which was less than the sticker of $37,100 (including the non-negotiable accessories: step bars and the extra bed lights)

Build your own by hand. Probably better Quality control

You should look at other dealerships. I think you could do better if it's really 1k off sticker. The options alone they added probably are more than the difference.

    :rofl::rofl:

Radar O'Reilly one! Get a job at a dealer and start sending parts home, piece by piece.

If you're doing the labor yourself you might come out ahead, but if you're buying from the dealer with the work done -- and presumably warranted -- that might be the way to go. No alignment issues to worry about, no shimmies to track down, etc.... No offense at all is meant by this, but the fact that you're considering buying a dealer-built truck suggests that you're not the type that obessess about every detail of every component... so maybe the dealer route is the way to go? Plus you get to finance the cost of all the mods. Either way, GL and enjoy your Taco.

The dealer is going to mark up the parts and charge for labour to install the parts for you. If they don't want to remove the step bars. Then they aren't the dealer for you.
Do it yourself. that way you know you are getting quality parts and you know what work is done on your truck.

Don't think anybody is serious about building one by hand, that would cost you 5 trucks worth of money, and you have to buy from a dealer cause Toyota can't sell direct to you.

I think I misunderstood the OP's question... I was under the impression he was asking about buying a regular 4x4 and building it up to TRD Pro specs vs. buying a Pro off the lot from the dealer. My bad!

A new bolt here, a new bolt there, a new bolt everywhere.
The time just depends on how much you want to build. Should you buy from the dealer? Well, that depends, are you one of those people who get impatient easily? If, so then yes. If no than I say build your own. Thats what I did.

OP, can you elaborate more on what you want to build?
Tell us what you are looking to have as a final product and I bet you get more information here.
If you want tow package its best to get a truck with it already on. If you want bed lights, there are other aftermarket options.
    More detail please.

It's not that hard to take off the steps. If he has what you want, get it. Take the steps off and sell them.

I recommend shopping out of state if you are willing to pay for a short hop plane ticket and gas home (and of course if it ends up cheaper overall). I will PM you a recommendation that isn't "too" far away.
