If that dealership has what you want but will not give you a good price, I would just go the the next closest dealership and find a similar truck and see if they could give you a better deal. Then at the last second before you close the deal, tell them that you want a different color (or whatever the difference is). Most likely that dealership will then try to do a dealer trade with the other dealer to get the Tacoma you want, now at the lower price.

The trick is to not let the dealer know that you want them to do the trade, make them offer you the trade.

I just want a TRD OR 4x4, auto, double cab with no extras on it. Like I said, the dealer has one, but has a couple extras that they said they won't take off. Furthermore, even if they did it would simply drop the price to what it costs to have one built. I'm not in a big hurry, and I figure that if the dealership won't sell the one they have on the lot for at least $1k less than I can build for, I might as well just build.

I don't understand why the dealership wouldn't just do this if it meant the difference b/t selling a car and not selling a car.

I'm a little new to the idea of building. Can you explain further.

In your case, internet sales will be your best bet. Email a few dealers within the area you are willing to travel and sit back and wait. When one gives you a price, reply with Well dealer x is willing to get it for me for x dollars less. It works.

Invoice or MSRP? If you do mean invoice, how did you manage that?

Exact same here. I couldn't find the DCLB TRD OR I wanted, I didn't want P&T and a bunch of other things like step rails and a tanneau cover the dealers usually throw in to force a higher sale price. Clearly there is enough margin for the dealers at invoice cost that they'll go through this exercise if you've worked them enough vs. other local dealers.

Could I have got a better "deal"? Yeah, I likely could have got a similar truck with P&T and other stuff at a larger discount, but I'd still be paying more overall for the truck. To me I finally decided it wasn't so much the % discount that mattered, it was getting the truck I wanted at a reasonable price.

I always say, start walking off lot, and if they chase you down you have wiggle room, if not you know their bottom line.

Don't take it personal. It's a business transaction. You're not the first person to ask for a deal, and you won't be the last. Remember, they make these trucks all year round. there is one for you at a price you can live with somewhere. Unless you are trying to get $5k below invoice or something, then there might not be very many of these out there for you...

I wanted an OR Manual with P&T which is next to impossible to find.

Don't be afraid to walk away. Most people are paying invoice. The Out the door price is usually around MSRP. My truck was a TRD OR with MSRP of 40,350 and I got it at invoice at 36,600 but after taxes titles tags and all that it shot back up to 40

MSRP is the norm, if you have trade-in negotitate on that end and don't argue MSRP. Always works for me. Get the biggest trade-in and not price on new truck.

Being from Oklahoma myself, my experience. None of the dealerships come off very much. They sale to quickly.

Best bet, if you are willing to travel. Do it. People buy Tacomas at MSRP everyday in our area. And the dealerships know it.

Go north, texas is just as bad. And expect to compromise. Hard to get everything you want in life AND negotiate price. Cant have your cake and eat it too.

In Oklahoma we do things differently. TTL is paid at a tag office. No negotiations with it at dealerships. (Mostly)

I did this last night and it worked. I got a local dealer to sell me one for what I was willing to pay $34,500. Thank you very much.
