I bought my Tacoma in mid November and am still waiting on my tags almost 4 weeks later. Was curious if anyone else has run into this issue.

The state I bought the truck in is Virginia. Dealership keeps telling me they will call me. Temp tag will of course expire Dec 25 (what do I have to do wait until Christmas?).

I'm not sure if the hangup is with the dealership or the DMV. Any suggestion is appreciated.

I had a similar issue. I live in and purchased my vehicle in Virginia, but registered it in Washington State. The dealership, VA DMV, and WA DMV had to figure their shit out and it took forever, I think about six weeks. I ended up driving with an expired temp tag for about a week. I called the dealership to ask where the hell my plates were and they said they would reissue my temp tag for longer no problem.

If I were you and were worried about getting a ticket, I'd just ask your dealer for a temp plate extension, mine was more than willing to do so.

Thanks for the info. I was told today that it can take 4-6 weeks. My response was "you're kidding right?" Then I was told it usually takes less time. The frustrating thing is that there is no way to see what the status is.

My other two new car purchases in the past involved the dealerships grabbing the plates from a stack they already had ready to go.

Meanwhile the temp tags scream "steal me I'm new."

Whether or not I get my real tags, I leave the temps on until about a week after they expire.

Finally, 2 days short of a full month, I got my tags. I pressured my sales guy that sold me the truck two days ago to get on it and find out where the hangup was. I told him it would be nice to get the tags before Christmas!

Never found out where the hangup was. I'm not sure if it was the DMV, the dealership, or both.

I'll bet that this time of year is busy for dealerships AND the DMV. I saw on the news that this year sales were down from last year.

I could't find an SR anywhere in the NOVA area here. Did you special order?

This surprises everyone? Tags take 2-4 weeks typically here in Texas. Got mine for the Tacoma week 3.

It took about 8 weeks for the dealer to get mine and call me to come get them.

If the dealer called to come get them, thats usually a sign they've been there for a while and "forgot" to mail them lol. Which dealer was it?

Dealer told me they would call me, not mail them. It was Pat Lobb Toyota of McKinney. Since then for various reasons I will never go back for any reason.

I'll bet this has a lot to do with it. I'm gonna check to see if the sticker indicates November or December. Then again the paperwork could sit around for a while too.

Dealerships are real efficient at taking your money quick though.

I hadn't heard anything when I bought my truck from them. After I found out a coworkers husband bought his 4runner from them and they have service done on the 4R and her lexus and think they do a great job. I think there service department has no knowledge of what they are doing and I would trust a trained monkey to do a better job working on a vehicle. That's from only 1 visit to the service department. I dont really trust dealers to work on my vehicle unless I have to due to warranty. as I dont want to pay for parts on a new truck.

A back step for when I get older, Carhartt seatcovers, 4Runner wheels, Topper, and "tats all folks"! --for now!!
This totally is a state dependent question, as some do not know, EVERY STATE IS DIFFERENT as to their licensing rules and regulations
In other words it depends on where you live and register your vehicle
Missouri-- you get your plates/and or registration when you go into the State office to pay your sales taxes on the vehicle.
It may take a week or so to get the paperwork through the finance agency --but I have no experience with these people. You have 30 days to pay your taxes.

Maybe license plates are hand crafted by local artisans nowadays. Like beer, hamburgers, lunchmeat (Dietz and Watson commercials make this ridiculous claim), $5.00 bread in grocery stores, etc...etc...etc...

I agree with markmizzou. In Texas I payed my taxes with the purchase of the truck. Never had to go in to a state office.

I go to two Toyota dealers only in DFW. Family Toyota Burleson (my sales guy is there) or Toyota of Plano. Had warranty work and the covered/free maintenance done at both locations without any issue. Good experiences all around

I went to Toyota of Plano for my last service. was much happier with them. I'll be back to plano in another 2 weeks for my 10k service.
