Gonna smoke these Bilstein 6112's next!

Bilstein told me that the 6112's are 40% more firm on rebound and 20% softer on compression vs. a 5100 paired with stock coil. I conclude that they are valved differently.

You can count on it. Just got the pass side assembled.

Definitely harder to assemble with the loose washers. Pry bar was helpful.

 

How did the burn process go? Was it a pain?

Wow those look great. Some kits require more back spacing on the wheels to fit their spindle reinforcement kits. I know you have more offset?(or less BS?) with your 4runner wheels, would gusseting like this work with stock wheels?

 

Crom I'm dying over here wondering if I should go with the AAL or not. If I've got constant load of 300lbs (Hc swing out w/ spare) I'd hate to put on the Dakar pack and add .5 inches to the truck lol. I can't visualize the outcome. I thought the AAL to the OEM pack would hold up a bit better than it did after I put the swing out on. Fail there.

 

Are these going to be offered as a kit? They look great!

The 4runner have less BS, 4.5". The stock TRD off-road wheels are 5.25". So 4runner wheels stick out .75" more, which I needed to solve a mirad of tire fitment issues.

The truck shop spindle design has been around a long time, but not well known among overlanders. It's offered by a specialty shop here in San Diego. You might be able to ship your spindles in, don't know, you'll have to ask. Talk to James if you call.

The design retains sway bar, and can run stock wheels AFAIK. Best feature IMO, is super strong. All the benefits and no shortcomings when compared to other aftermarket spindle gussets. In my opinion it's the next best thing to a fully fabricated spindle. Maybe it's even better, since it retains factory spec part. Right now I'm super glad to have them.

I like Dakar. They take weight well. They were nice and flexy when I had the overload pulled. That might work well for you.

The stock leaf pack was sad. I ran them for 55K miles, and they were shot out. I'd bottom out over speed bumps every day hated it.

Love the Dakar's, especially now since they are silent.

Got pass side all done except brake pads. Had to do some minor custom alterations to the wheel speed sensor bracket and brake line bracket. Also had to modify dust shield a little bit. Came together real nice.

Got started on driver's side assembly. Got LCA in and the new axle in, diff filled, no leaks.

Ran out of time today.

It's a fine part. Machined well.

Because my rig is built for overland travel, with an edge for performance, I was gonna go without, and pay it forward to someone that wants it.

 

Did your camburg boots rip on you? Both of mine have been seeping right after 1k. Definitely ripped/cracked... Very disappointed. Wheelers sent me out boots for $14 but they don't feel that flexible. They actually feel fairly stiff like they will crack.

 

I wonder what Wheeler sent you. Doesn't sound like mine.

The Moog ball joints are good, the boots however are fu**king terrible. They are really soft and easy to puncture. They are also too tall. My passenger side ripped in short order after install. I've talked to Moog many times to complain gave them my contact info told them to have a design engineer call me. No call. All they had to do is copy the factory boot design. So stupid.

I talked to Camburg twice. They don't care and tell me to call Moog.

I took precise dimensions of a desired boot was gonna talk to energy suspension to see if they can make a replacement boot from silicone, poly, or whatever. They have some universal products but none that would work.

Anyways, Moog will send you replacement boots for free under their lifetime warranty. Installing them is a pain in the ass. After much frustration trying to get new boot on I cheated by cutting the internal metal band, so it could fit over the BJ base, then wire wrapped it tight for retention.



Such a stupid boot design. The folds ruin the boots.


My driver's side boot is okay. It's wrinkled pretty bad because it's too tall, but is still intact.

Voted for you in BotY because I have so many plans for my GF's Taco, and my future Gen 1 Taco or Gen 3 4Runner and I hope to have a thread that's even a quarter as useful as yours when I get to it. I have a lot of the same goals from my vehicles as you.

 

Agreed on stupidity. Definitely would be Amazing to get another company to make a replacement...

Also when I called camburg they made no mention on lifetime warranty on the boots...nor did they offer to send new ones. Weak

Thank you. The Tacoma has been great reliable vehicle. Good luck with your builds. Build threads are fun, I value the feedback from others. I've been saved a number of times from various misteps, and steered in the right direction based on my needs and wants. And reporting back my experience in turn helps others.

 

Are you guys talking about the 1/4" drivers side spacer to correct the "Taco Lean"?
