With OE nav in any vehicle, that I am aware of, you aren't getting the latest mapping tech, you aren't going to get map upgrades for free, and you have to go to the dealer to get them.

Once those things are fixed, things will be better.

OP, in your case, I'd just get the Garmin and not use the in dash nav. Simplest, cheapest solution.

I have the factory JBL unit. Other than random restarts it's been one of the better features on the truck

I opted for the JBL package in my truck. I've used the factory navigation app only a couple of times and will agree that it needs some updating but it's not due to the headunit itself but rather the vendor that supplies the navigation data for Toyota. You can opt for an aftermarket headunit but unless you purchase one with Garmin or TomTom support, you may find yourself in the same position but with a lighter wallet. For now, I think it's best to use the navigation off your phone (Google Maps, Waze, etc.) and stream it via BT.

"Coolest.. I've ever had in any of my new cars."

I'm gonna guess he doesn't own a Tesla, hence his context of "coolest."

I hate the stock nav system too. Google maps or waze work much better. I upgraded my access cab to an O+ speakers, amp and sub and I love it.

I've been planning to use an iPad as my next head unit for a long time. I bought a top-of-the-line (at the time) Alpine WNA-910 nav unit for my old Honda and as much as the bluetooth and iPhone connections spoiled me, there is no excuse for how bad the tech in aftermarket navs is.

All head units these days are lightyears behind our phones and tablets. There is no reason to use anything else in-dash.

Of course I didn't expect to buy a 2017 TRD Off Road Tacoma...

I was initially pretty impressed by the entune system and I think it's probably above average for factory setups. But even after only a few days in, I really just want to put an iPad mini in the dash. (If you're an android fan, insert your tablet of choice here)

The key now, is that I need a way to ensure that the middle screen in the cluster doesn't disappear without the head unit, or perhaps even put an iPhone5 there or something. I'd like to keep the eco-abilities, maintain the controls on the wheel, and keep that backup camera.

This could get a little hectic but I think I'm down to take the plunge. I'll be looking into the Maestro and other options. If anyone has any bright ideas, please share.

    Thanks for this thread.

So i took my truck in yesterday for probably the 10th time to diagnose my radio/nav issues. Such as no nav and unit rebooting every few minutes.
Toyota engineers got involved finally and said they wont do anything till i remove my lightbars and put the truck exactly back to stock. I already disconnected all wires and just left the lights mounted. But thats not good enough. Can they ask this of me or do they have to fix it/prove my lights are not causing the issue before making me remove them to resolve the issue. Any info/input is apreciated. Im in canada so any state laws may not help me. But i can arbitrate or apply for buyback through amvic/camvap.

If the light bars are mounted with wires hanging loose I'd love to hear their explanation on how they might be causing a problem.
