Decided to throw my truck on a lift at work to check the zerk fittings to see if they were greased. Didn't find them before I found this...




Found the source at the top of the engine. Looks to be some type of sensor input.


Called up a dealer and dropped it off the next morning. While I was there I brought paper work on the ECU tsb and Lower arm tsb. I also mentioned that at 55-60 MPH there is a howling in the rear. I get a call few hours later stating that they needed to order the sensor for tomorrow and that the technician did not hear any howling... The howling is super noticeable so I am going to probably need to schedule a test drive with one of their techs when I go to pick up the vehicle. Also asked to check the ATF level and explained that I understand its a time consuming process, they said everything looked fine. (doubt they actually checked it manually)

Kinda a bummer with only 450 miles on the truck but Im not too worried since its being taken care of under warranty. Hopefully this is the extent of my issues.

 

Can you tell me about or send a link about the ECU and lower arm TSB?

The lower arm TSB is just some plugs they put in the holes to eliminate them from making sound at certain speeds.

 

Added Morimoto HID's 6500k 55w for low beams and the china version of the opt7 LED's for the fogs.





Used industrial grade Velcro to attach them. Did not want to drill into the aprons or radiator support to affix them, sanded both locations a little to help with adhesion. May relocate RF ballast for cosmetic reasons.

Added the front bed rail that comes missing on 3rd gens for whatever reason.



And for the second time my left side cam shaft sensor is leaking oil, after only a few weeks since replacement... Its just a tiny puddle at the moment but I will be needing to contact the dealer again for warranty work. lame.




ARE Z shell being installed tomorrow.

 

Nice! I came back to the Tacoma from a 4Runner also, mine was an 11 Limited with way to many mods to list.

Where are these located exactly I'd like to check mine for any leaks? TIA

 

Put that passenger one behind the washer fluid tank. Much better location.

 

Sorry for the weird blurred pic, was messing around with windows photo editor. They replaced the first one with 400-500 miles on the vehicle. Its been back from the dealer for about 2 weeks with me checking the sensor every other day. Now it has a small leak at the base of the bolt that holds it in.

 

Ya I may switch it up, just thought the adhesive would stick to the roughed up plastic better than sheet metal. Does seem a bit out of place in its current spot.

 

I used the industrial strength Velcro for mine. Hasn't moved in over 10 months. Pretty shielded back there. Need to find a better place for my drivers side though

So the vehicle spent 26 days in all at the dealer getting the Cam Journal replaced due to bad machining at the factory allowing oil to seep through a tiny hole. Got it back a week before I was due to take a 900 mile on and offroad trip to Baja. Was not stoked on risking such an adventure with a untested vehicle. Everything turned out ok and I am quite impressed with the performance of the vehicle compared to my past trucks, in its stock form.

Here is base-camp setup at the actual end location. I have a Riteline SUV tent that umbilical's up to the bed of the Truck, which we sleep in with a full truck air mattress.




Hopefully looking to do the big wheel tires and suspension upgrade for next update.

 

Bounced around alot of ideas on suspension and what would work for me. Was initially going full blown King suspension with front and rear remote reservoirs w/adjusters, but then backed down a bit in the interest of saving money and being real with what I do with this truck. Decided on Fox's 2.5 coil-overs in the front with Camburg UCA, and Fox 2.0 with reservoirs in the rear with the Dakar leaf pack.

Had alot of trouble adjusting the Coil-overs to lessen the rake caused by the Dakars in the rear. The entire shock body would rotate with the preload ring when we were trying to increase lift. Nothing we did would allow the ring to move on its own. To keep the entire body from unscrewing from the top of the shock I had to sacrifice the top layer of threads and clamp it down. This was pretty frustrating, and after 6 rotations of the preload ring the thing would not move any more.





I like the look and feel of the suspension, still hoping the Dakars will settle a bit to leave just a slight rake.

 

Fantastic looking truck! What is the "AC mod" you have under your future mod list? I'm reading that as Air Conditioner...

Currently the AC drains right above the right frame rail. Overtime this could increase that chance of the frame developing some surface rust.
This is to just redirect the outlet to the side so it drains on the ground.

 

Well I'll be damned. #3rdgenproblems. I guess I'll have to add that to my list as well! That's a good catch by that OP.

 

Truck looks great! I like the sport hood, pro grill and the simplified TRD graphic. Armor it up and you're ready to rock-n-roll.

Did you relocate the sway bar? Looking at the pics it looks like the relocate block is there but thought i'd ask. Look at the springs for any sign of contact with the sway bar and/or control arm. As to the rake and the amount of preload (thats alot of thread showing btw) couldn't you have just removed a leaf out of the pack?

 

That photo of the shock is before I tried to adjust the preload to increase lift. Another guy I know that builds off road vehicles made the same statement about the amount of thread showing. I may try and slowly back it down a bit until the noise goes away. May also remove the 3rd leaf of the Dakars if they do not settle enough. Just frustrating since the left side has the same amount of thread showing with no noise. Today Im going to get the vehicle off the ground and start shaking/kicking things to try and recreate the noise.

 

6 months update. Ditched the Fox coil-overs in the front for extended travel remote res Kings. Did 10 turns on the pre-load ring to get the front up enough to match the Dakar leaf pack in the rear. Going to have the Fox's rebuilt and sold.



Also added a carrier bearing spacer and extended rear brake lines.





On the interior I added the Hondo Garage phone mount and radio nobs.
