Maybe just me, but I've learned plenty of things I didn't even realize I didn't know from other people's 'stupid' questions. Seriously, who the hell 'reads' the manual? If I have a question, I MAY reference the manual, or more likely Google it, but I don't sit there reading the manual cover to cover. "Ohh, ahhh...that's how I lock the doors! Oh! That's the gas gauge!! Fascinating!" Right... One more thing I might try is going on a Tacoma forum and starting a discussion for the sake of anyone else who might be wondering. Bad idea around here apparently, we all know everything already, so we might as well shut the site down.

Maybe it's just me, but I got a new shiny toy and said "Ooh, what's this button do, ooh, what's this button do". If the question had been "I still don't understand crawl control/MTS/locking the rear differential, help?" there would be some slack. I swear you can push the buttons in there and you won't get ejected, give it a try sometime. Did you look at that button and go "Wow, where's the box that the wavy snakes shoot out of?!? Is that OEM?!"

That's exactly what I did. I pushed the button, then looked at the left front wheel expecting the snakes to come out. Had no idea it was for heating the mirrors. Really disappointed that it wasn't snakes.

Sorry that the wannabe "Read your Manual" patrol hit you...
Use the ignore button, so far I had added a few in there and it makes this experience a lot better.

So now I wonder how many people went and got the manual out after reading this? My manual stays next to my recliner and I am always reading things on here and the manual at the same time. Just my .02

I feel like this didn't even warrant a "read the manual" reply. I had a reply showing the exact page in manual (page 372 if you were wondering) there for his question, but I was mean so it's gone. I'd like to think people would try anything themselves before just defaulting to asking the TW forums. If not the manual, maybe google? Who am I kidding, I worked an IT help desk in college and people need to be told their device has to be plugged in to be powered. Sorry I derailed this thread with my expectations everybody, they've been lowered. :santa:

Not like I have lots of free time- but my last vehicle was a 97 Dakota - 5 speed manual trans bare bones truck. - original owner and no need to read the manual from day one. Fast forward to 2016 and WTF- $30K for a truck? WTF! My friends call my new truck the "space ship" since the Dodge had been beat to shit in 19 years.
So hell yeah- going to read the F'n manual.
A lot of funny things in there. Don't drive with the rear split window open because you luggage could fly out. If the passenger air bag light is not displaying correctly, ask the passenger to sit up straight with both feet on the floor...like I would ever do that.....

This is every thread that ends up being who read the manual versus who hasn't..

Anybody who hasn't read the manual is a moron, and everybody who has read the manual is a jackass!

Boynoyce, a lot of the manual is just "Cover your ass" language for the manufacturer. No different than why coffee places have to tell you the coffee may be hot. I can't even anymore in this thread, I wish you luck. In all honesty I recommend the tips and tricks thread, sounds like you will find a lot of stuff you like in there.

I am not a read the whole manual type of guy. Flame away if you think that is dumb. I can assure you that I have done much dumber things that that. I am, however, a stickler for playing with all the new knobs and gizmos on the new toy when I first get it.

I just read the manual because it was advice I got that I decided to follow. Since I have the SR5, I skipped through the parts that didn't pertain. Not my favorite read, but oh well- and the heated side view mirrors are one of my favorite features- really cool.

If you had read the manual, it would have told you about all kinds of little buttons that you "never notice." If you can't be bothered to take the time to familiarize yourself with your own vehicle, don't be surprised when people suggest you do so before going out of their way to help you.

The real benefit of reading the manual is that it'll expose to you details that you're not even looking for, giving you not only more information on what you need, but also things that you don't need now but may need in the future. "Oh hey, didn't I see something about this in the manual when I read it last year? Here it is, the answer I needed." Something like that can be invaluable if you're in the middle of nowhere with no access to TacomaWorld's babysitting services.

Largely the same value of post-secondary education: exposure to things you didn't know you didn't know, so that now you at least know they exist.

I test drove my truck and never noticed the heated mirrors .. it wasn't until i picked up my new truck from dealer and my salesman said that he wanted to go over everything with me on the truck, he says " here's the switch for your heated mirrors " i was surprised as i didn't know it had them. I've never had them before and i've already had to use them a couple times. They work great!
