Should I install bilsteins before I get my tsb leaf spring done?

Called my stealership today complaining about the harsh ride in the back and that I wanted to get the tsb leaf spring done. They set up an appointment no questions asked so it looks like I'm going to get it done next week. The only thing is I got my 4 bilsteins 5100 in the mail yesterday from dsms and wasn't sure if I could get away with installing them before I get the tsb. I would assume no and that I should leave everything stock in order to get the tsb done but let me know what you guys think.

 

Leave it stock till after the TSB. That way there's no questions asked.

 

If you're just doing the front, you should throw them in there so they can align it for you which is part of the TSB.

 

I am in the same situation, have the 5100's sitting in the garage waiting and I have the TSB appointment on Tuesday at the dealership. I am going to wait for 2 reasons. First, I don't want any hassle from the dealership and second, I am kind of curious to feel the ride with just the TSB for a couple of days before I put the 5100's on her on Friday.

 

I would have it done at the same time,they will be changing the front shocks anyway, it will save you money on a alignment

Thanks for the quick responses. I think I'm going to install the fronts today and then wait to do the rears til after the tsb. My appt for the tsb isn't til the 17 th is going that long without aliignment going to kill me?

 

You'll be fine till the 17th

 

Ask the dealer if they would install them during the TSB like I did; some will and some will not. It could save you some cash if they will.

if they have already checked out the truck and approved the TSB, wouldnt you want to put on the new shocks and get a free alignment?

 

They havent checked out the truck yet

 

So I dropped my truck off at the off road shop earlier today and came back to the shop after a couple of hours to find out that the mechanic had hurt his back had to go to the hospital and they had never gotten around to putting the shocks on my truck. I told them I'll bring it back on my next day off but after lots of thoughts on your guys' responses, i think this is a blessing in disguise and I'm going to keep the truck stock until after the tsb. I also went by the dealer since it was nearby and apparently my appt that I have scheduled is only to check out my truck and make sure it qualifies for the leaf spring upgrade and then they will have to set up another appt to actually install the new springs. This is even more incentive to keep it stock so thanks for all the input and i will post some pics once its all complete.

When I had mine done, the dealer installed my 5100's on all four corners for free. They gave me the TSB Bilsteins to keep...

 

^yea when i go in for the first appt if they give me the go ahead i will definently try and weasel the 5100 installation out of them

 

I communicated with the service manager by e-mail (TSB attached) and had him approve both the TSB and putting in my 5100's. TSB parts were ordered based on the e-mail alone without inspecting my truck. I also confirmed by e-mail that the springs were 4 leaf. I then took said e-mail in for good measure and had everything done...

 

Per the latest TSB revision there isn't a shock upgrade for the '09 and '10 model years so the OEM shocks should be left intact. Now saying this, the dealership that did the TSB for me said they changed out the shocks even though the shocks are the same Tokicos as stock but I wouldn't rely on it as being consistent for every dealership. It seems we know more than most dealerships as far as our trucks are concerned so take it as you will.

Now as far as the OP is concerned if you were going to pay someone to install your shocks why not have the dealership do it when they are doing the TSB? It doesn't make sense to pay twice for a service unless you want to.

I'd call the service department and ask them how much they would charge to put on your shocks while doing the TSB.

 

The alignment would be the main reason to do it before taking it in for the TSB. Do it after and you're paying for another alignment.
