You have never worked in a retail setting i see. First off, the invoice price of every item in that store is 15-25% of the retail price they are selling it to you. That is the cost to the store, not even what the company is getting in a bulk rate for the item. Some disposable items are less than 10% cost.

Also every item that is returned under a $25 retail price is not even calculated as a return for the store's accounts, only for inventory. Those low cost items literally get thrown in a dumpster after being sprayed red. In the case of higher priced items, if you buy something at one location, and return it as another, guess what, you just cost the store you returned to a negative item on their balance sheet. Yep, a return is a negative revenue item even if the store you return to doesnt carry that item. So i guess you are stealing when you return anything to a different location even for a "legitimate reason"

As well, stealing involves taking something without consent. Where exactly is that happening? Walk in, say youre not 100% satisfied, per their own policies, and they gladly accept the item. No misrepresentation is made about why the item is coming back. Being concerned about a multi million dollar national company over the morality of returns, that sounds like corporate welfare to me. The last thing it is is stealing in any sense of the word.

A bit OT, but how does one determine the accuracy of a torque wrench?

Easiest is to send it a shop that specializes in that, however you can perform almost the same procedure at home. You will need accurate weights for it though, in several increments. You basic dumbell set may not be exact enough to properly do this. You basically weight the handle with say 20ft-lb, set the wrench right before 20ft-lb, and slowly increase the setting until it clicks. Heres a outline of how it works.

You can probably also ignore a good number of the attorneys and law enforcement personnel on here if your so sensitive to ethics deviations.

I disagree. At the very least it's being dishonest and it's costing the store money which in turn has to be made up somewhere, passed onto the HONEST customers who pay for products they use.

You're the type of guy who leaves a $0.75 tip at a restaurant just because you can. :smack:

so its not stealing...maybe fraud is a better term to use?
and how it that not misrepresenting what you're doing? a more accurate tale to tell the nice, minimum wage earning clerk would be that you really only needed the tools for one task and now that you're done you no longer need them and that you were too cheap to rent the tools from somewhere else or to hire someone to do the work for you. Then see what they say about whether or not you an return your purchase.
people like you are why stores are becoming more strict about return and exchange policies. I wouldn't be surprised if they alter theirs to include a restocking fee for speciality items. For example REI used to offer a lifetime guarantee on anything purchased there, now its a year. Too many people were taking advantage and they were losing money so they had to protect themselves from scams.

And yes, I've worked in retail, I know how it works

Just a tip I forgot about after replacing my rear shocks, but remembered a few days later. You probably know this, but thought I would give it for others that don't. After using a torque wrench you should return the setting to the lowest torque setting possible, so the spring inside doesn't stay in the compressed state and this will prolong the life of your torque wrench.

I understand where your coming from. Though from my view you have a top heavy corporate structure that pays themselves high salaries, and looks upon the employment of low skill/education retail workers as a burden. The prices of your goods are going to be affected by things like inflation, state business regulations, workers insurance/health care, not by the returns of products. The corporate level does not even analyze that at a major negative, its expecting one out of four items to be returned. You have to remember with HF that they are basically making a huge Alibaba order for everything they have. They already own everything from the port to the store. That is why they can take every return as a straight revenue deduction (and tax deduction as well). They have no suppliers to answer to for shelf space.

You should also excerise the torque wrench prior to using it. For clicker types at least. Our standard practice is to do it 8 times at 60% of the value you want to torque to.

Is it really needed....probably not for the average use we do on our trucks (leg nuts, shock bolts, ect) but it is something to consider.
