Anyone done this? Test drove a 6 speed manual today and it almost seemed slower than my 2002 V6 5 speed...
a hell of a lot nicer though.

I had a 3.4 T100 before my 3rd Gen, similar power train to a 1st Gen, and it did feel a little peppier around town, right off idle. But after 25k miles of all kinds of conditions, mountains, freeway etc ... the 3rd Gen has far more power in every real-world situation. Both my trucks were/are automatics though.

I have owned 1st, 2nd, and now have a 3rd Gen on order, all V6 6 Speeds, sure hope the 17 feels like it is more powerful. They only had an Automatic to test drive and it felt ok on power but it was also kinda hard to tell with it shifting up and down constantly.

1st gen was way lighter and has less top end power too.

I went from an 03 to my 16. I've owned multiple second gens as well, the 16 is night and day compared to my first gen. Power wise it's a very noticeable difference. The second gen guys will all have heart attacks when they read this but I much prefer my 1st and 3rd Gens to either of the second gens I owned previously.

My 3rd gen blows my 1st gen away in performance and fuel efficiency.

    I went from a 1998 2.4 5MT to a 2016 3.5 6MT. While I loved my 1st gen (my daughter loves it now), I far prefer my 2016.

The biggest adjustment I had was going from a physical accelerator cable on the 1st gen to the electronics of the 3rd gen... There's a slight delay with the electronics vs the cable on the accelerator, but it's just something to get used to and adjust for.

04 to 16 here. The 16 feels mushy and slower at low rpm unless you run it in ect. Push down the accelerator at higher speeds tho and it blows the 1st gen up. There, I gave everyone something to hate on me.

No ECT mode needed for me though, if I order it will be a MT.

    I'm leaning towards doing it.

Try it in S mode, no longer feels mushy at lower speeds.

I've got a turd gen Tacoma in the garage and a turd gen 4runner in the driveway. About the only plus to the 4runner is the "don't give a shit factor" for going hunting/fishing/grocery shopping. The tacoma is a little wider, but it's nice to be able to put two elbows on the center console, so its a trade off.

I was once the owner of a 2012 Tacoma as well and I can't remember any noticeable power differences between the two, but the 16' has a ton more luxuries.

I wish my 16 blew my 03 away in fuel efficiency. My first gen had steel bumpers and skids and still averaged about 2mpg over this new truck. My cbi bumper is aluminum on the new truck but I took a big hit on mpgs when I put it on. I think aerodynamics come into play alot more on these new trucks.

I may be doing the same in a month. But only 3rd gen I tested was auto and my manual 2.4 seemed more responsive. But then again I didn't want to put push the 3rd gen on my test drive lol.

With the 6 speed MT I putz around town and find low end power a bit underwhelming, but hold a gear a moment longer and the truck winds up and moves. I'm impressed with the power, and simply wish Toyota had gone with a different 1st to 2nd combo on the ratio pairing in the manual.

That said it will be perfect down the road when I use up the stock tires and go up one size.

Had a 2002 before current 2017... 15 years of technology difference and it really shows.

Trade or no trade? If no trade thats way better than I did. If trade, I have no idea.
