Could be as simple as an intermittent brake pedal switch. The switch has occasionally been reported to fail open, preventing the truck from being shifted out of Park. No reason why it can't fail closed.
2nd gens didn't have the recurring crank sensor problem. The 1GR crank sensor is common across a wide swath of Toyota models and "proven", while the 2GR-FKS crank sensor is a new P/N.

It's the risk you take with buying a vehicle in the first year after redesign. Had a friend who bought a 2001 Honda Civic (first year of 7th gen) and had endless problems.

I'm curious as to why Toyota would not want drivers to ever press the brake and gas at the same time, and make it a significant pain in the ass to resolve if you do? I understand pressing both for prolonged periods of time damage could be done to the transmission, etc...

But there are a few circumstances where I've had to use the brake and gas at the same time on my 1st gen 2003 DCSB TRD OR. The most common is when on a steep hill stopped at a stop light and some a-hole pulls up within 3" of my rear bumper. I've had to press the brake and gas to make sure I don't roll back into them. I've heard stuff on here about 3rd gen AT's rolling back in this situation, can you handle this with the parking brake now or is there a hill assist?

Remember all the unintended acceleration lawsuits that plagued Toyota a few years ago? This is the result.

Does it apply for parking brake and brake pedal?

First thing I checked was the parking brake. Was fine when I parked it.

They probably did this as a result of the stuck accelerator fiasco they had a few years back. In many of those cases, both the accelerator was pushed and the brakes were applied. Also if you did have a rogue stuck pedal, hitting the brakes causing limp mode would be desirable.

It's actually recommended to engage the parking brake before shifting into park on an incline. It would not be good to have this drop the truck into limp mode everytime.

So does this rule out heel toe downshifting? If so, is there anyway to disable this function?

Thanks for the info. My 3rd gen doesn't show up for another 3 weeks. I'm just trying to figure out what I can do if I can't hit brake and gas. It's somewhat common for me to have to do this for short durations. Driving up to the ski resorts around here in traffic, on a steep hill, stopped on slick roads, guy behind me creeps within inches of the bumper, etc... sounds like I can pull the e-brake, hit the gas lightly and release the e-brake to avoid backward movement without triggering limp mode.

Is this brake and gas pedal just on autos? I have had both the gas and brake pedal pressed on my manual and had no issues what so ever.

Not sure if the function is on the M/T, common practice for a runaway accelerator is to press the clutch in.

There's actually some thought put into the brake override logic so it isn't intrusive. :) http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/at...er-ride-system-toyota_brakeoverridesystem.pdf

One member here even sells a shim that raises the gas pedal up about 3/4" to make it easier to blip the throttle while half your foot is on the brake pedal. Works fine. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/manual-transmission-guys-gas-pedal-spacer-inside.435045/

P.S. Brake override is implemented on fly-by-wire throttle systems only. If the throttle cable jams on your 1st gen due to corrosion or icing, you would have to use a bit more common sense and shift to neutral. :)

its a Toyota truck and that's all the modifications needed
its a new GEN3 truck with a new engine and transmission so your going to get some hiccups unfortunately you got hiccups at a bad time, ive owned 4 Toyota trucks from Hi Lux to GEN 1-GEN2 ALL HAD ISSUES that were resolved by Toyota with TSBs and Recalls and after they were resolved the trucks clocked well over 200K miles without major issues, yes at times it was inconvenient to deal with these issues but that's life, you got to face the facts and deal with your issues one at a time, if you get on the Toyota Tacoma sucks band wagon you will never get to really enjoy your truck cause you will constantly be looking for reasons to be unhappy and you will have a lot of cheerleaders that will keep feeding you negative vibes in order to keep you there.
