SOLVED! Post 2853 Leaking Injectors, Dealer Techs Rock! Extended Cranking after Engine Swap 3.4L 5vz

Oh and I love my second gen. Not sure why you wouldn't want one, they're just as reliable as a first gen but a bigger size, which is the exact same as a 3rd gen. The 1 GR is bulletproof as is everything behind it. The truck is quiet and drives well. The only real issue with the 2nd gens was the motor mounts in the 2005's, oh, and I guess the frame rot which is even worse on the 1st gens.

from what I read it was mainly over the still weak underpowered motors just "barely" a tad better then the 1st gens.

I kinda got the impression it was more about lack of being impressed by no real "wanted" improvements for the few areas of the 1st gens that were ignored.

I didn't really see anything where it was a "something wrong with them" complaint as much as it was "if that's the only changes they made i'll keep my 1st gen" kinda dislike related to them

to be honest, I share that sentiment too, im not looking for a race truck but it NEEDS to have 300 hp that can be controlled at the rear end for pulling small boats and trailers without needing 70% of all its power just to maintain speed.

I really liked what I heard about the new 3.5 engine power so I was seriously thinking about going new just to solve my towing needs which is my only real issue that I find im making excuses to learn to live with it. im getting 15 mpg towing with my 3.4 prerunner and 19/17 regularly but the 3.5 shows 21/19 mpg and the added power I wish I had.

too bad you cant just drop a 3.5 into a first gen, that would be a perfect upgrade for our trucks and I would prefer to go buy a 3.5 crate engine for it rather then buy a brand new truck

 

The 3.5 actually makes less power than a 4.0 1 GR below 3500 rpm. Plus you can always put a factory blower on a 1GR in less than 5 hours. My truck has it and it does have over 300 HP. The 3rd gen can tow well, when it keeps the 3.5 L engine above 4000 rpms all the time, which is not enjoyable. My 2nd Gen always towed a 4500 lbs loaded travel trailer just fine even on the stock engine. If anything the transmission would get hot if left in OD which of course no one who studied up on their Tacoma would do.

The third gen is a step backwards from a truck vantage point but a step forwards as a daily driver. Toyota is appealing to the larger market of daily drivers who want something that can move around a couch rather than something that tows well.

Anyone who thinks a 3rd gen is a better truck off the line, with or without anything behind ithe, is crazy. Yeah, when the 3rd gen gets going and keeps the engine above 4000 rpm it can make the power to out run a 2nd Gen, but who cares about that on a truck. The low end is where a truck needs power to tow.

Personally, if Toyota wanted an engine that could post awesome CAFE numbers as well as made the consumer happy, they should of stuck a 2.X L turbo engine in the Tacoma. Wait until the Ranger comes out with one. It'll blow the doors off the Tacoma with all its low end torque. Hopefully that will force Toyota to follow that trend finally. Even Honda, who hated boost, is now going to turbo engines to meet fake mpg numbers while providing large V6 power and V8 like torque in smaller vehicles.
