Plasti-dip as Primer

Hey y'all,

I started painting my chrome bumper to be body-matched today, and it got me thinking about getting rid of the last piece of chrome on the truck: the steps. I want to keep them, and since they're old, I'm thinking black textured paint (grip paint). My question: have any of y'all done this, and what did you use? I'm planning on eventually painting the whole part, not just the step pads. I'd thought about using the plasti dip as a primer since it's hard to stick regular paint and primer to chrome even with sanding, and then using spray bed liner over it. I did an experiment when I color matched my grille a couple years ago (I plasti dipped part of the chrome while traditionally sanded/primed the the rest; the plasti dip section is still holding well). My once concern is that there are steps, meaning they're gonna get stepped on a lot and how the spray combo will do with that. Thoughts?

Plastidip will not hold up to being "touched" alot. Steps..door handles will all peel after short amount of time.

I wouldn't use plastidip as a primer..
Definitely not for real paint topcoat.

 

Plastidip is great. Just not for those type projects.
I dipped my wheels..front grill..rear bumper and even my wife's whole civic.
I love it. Just not for that kinda stuff.

 

Sand them just enough to get rid of the smooth surface, but not deep enough to go through the chrome, epoxy or lacquer primer, then bed liner.

 

Thanks for the advice! I think my current plan of attack is:

-suck it up and sand the chrome
-prime everything (step pads and all)
-rustoleum spray liner

 

The spray liner should be okay just as-is, right? As in, as long as I do a thick enough coating, I don't need to add anything on top of it?
