    Hey Team TC!

I just took my truck in for it's 10k oil service at 9,500 miles. My truck has been sitting for a few days now so I went out to check the oil levels. 2 questions.

    1) How can I tell where the low and high level is on the dip stick? Are the dots the high and low markers?
    - If it is the dots, mine seems to be way overfilled.
    2) I wiped the dip stick off a few times, re dipped, and I keep noticing a lot of metal in the oil. Am I crazy or is that way to much to see after a fresh oil change? I was thinking that maybe they didn't replace my oil filter or something... I hate other people working on my truck, now I will never know.. haha

The 2 dots. Take the stick out. Let it sit for a few mins. Put it in. Then check.

I dont think thats metal. Just looks dirty imo. Was that the first wipe of the dipstick in a while?

The dots are the high and low. Best way I've found to check is after turning off engine, pull the dipstick and lay it on top of the radiator. Let oil in dip tube drain back down for a few minutes and then check. You only get one shot as the dipstick will pull oil up into the dip tube making it look overfilled. Hope this makes a little bit of sense.

This is the exact reason I no longer take the truck to my local dealer for anything. Last time they changed my oil I drained out almost 2 quarts to get to the correct oil level.

If you are concerned about metal in your oil then on your next change send a sample in to Blackstone.

That's not metal, just dirt stuck to the side of the dipstick.

i do mine when the engine is cold just pull it out and get the reading. once you start pulling it in and out the tube gets coated with oil and you will never get a good read. plus the oil is so clear that it is hard to see. whatever happened to good old yellow oil that you could see. if mine is dark so i can see it time to change it.IMO

I usually let my truck sit overnight before I pull the dipstick out, agree with everyone above with oil migrating up in the tube.

If you checked oil level on level ground, that's only about half a quart over. Not a big deal. I say leave it alone till your next oil change.

Do you not check it before leaving the dealership? If it's wrong make them correct it on the spot.

The metal (if indeed it is) could be from the dip stick vibrating against the inside of the tube in operation. A very tiny amount leaves noticeable dark stains on a paper towel.

Like others have said, could just be dirt from combustion too.

Dont worry about the color, if you're worried send it in for a oil sample to black stone. Your truck was a 60k warranty and i'll put money it will run forever. Yes thats pretty full, id take the drain plug out and drain it for a couple seconds and put it back in or take it back to the dealer. Now you got to realize the first 30k miles the person that changes your oil as ZERO experience most of the time they are idiots 90% of the time. I know as im a Toyota Master tech.

No, i was too naive to think I should. There is no way in hell I would ask them to fix it though. That's like sending your steak back for being cooked wrong...I don't want a pissed off grease monkey messing with my truck.

I personally wouldn't push my initial oil change past a couple thousand. But anyway, it's not uncommon to have higher than normal levels of worn metals initially. That's just the engine wearing in and is completely expected. I sent the last two oil changes out for analysis. One at 1600 and the other at 5k. The first showed high levels of engine material, the second was back to normal.

Yeah, my truck was sitting for about 3-4 days before I pulled the dipstick.

I'm thinking you might be right! I remember seeing this on my 1st Get when it was new... I think..

    Naw... Do you do that?

This makes sense. Vibrations, or maybe a dirty dipstick from the previous oil change? My KTM has 2 magnets that pull all the metal to the bottom of the case, I wish the tacoma had that!
