    Basically its getting hit with an object that doesn't penetrate the body

    Thanks! So if I understand correctly, it is mostly ships that hit orcas? Or it some kind of stupid guy/crew that do it intentional?

    Unlikely intentional but there is a 100m exclusion zone around orcas that boats aren't supposed to enter , but it could have been at night or in poor visibility , generally the orcas are pretty good at avoiding boats but it could have happened when it was sleeping or involved excessive speed , don't know

    Terrible news for the population however it happened though

    Ive seen orcas, humpbacks, belugas, etc right from the patio. Theyre fairly common here still and dont mind coming in the bay especially when the squid or capelin comes in

    There's only 79 orcas in the Southern Resident population now , I think this last death puts J pod at 25 individuals
