I've seen plenty of them just 30 minutes south in Mexico. I always thought they were ugly

I've driven plenty of Hilux's during my time in Iraq and they are pretty dang crappy. Gutless, underpowered, cheap interiors with terrible seats. Certainly nothing special. Oh, and they used to break on the regular

A few additions to make me feel cool.
They are better off road do to size and build quality. They are extremely reliable and are driven on what we consider a hardcore off road trail every day completely stock and they hold up in the middle east. I am not knocking the Tacoma. These are on a quality level in another league.

Meh. Basic, feature-less, utility vehicle. Don't like the design, don't like the short bed, don't like th cheap feeling all over the interior (been in a few), don't want diesel. They have their place in other parts of the world, but Toyota is right in not bringing them here - no one would buy them.

    Give me a LC70.

Nice thing about the Hilux diesel turbo is that the hood scoop is real. The intercooler lays flat on top of the engine, right under the scoop.

Also guessing those who claim 'gutless' were not wheeling a turbo version. It is quite capable. And in most of the rest of the world diesel is much cheaper than gas.

People who work their trucks, like a Hilux, hard, look at US Tacomas like most around here look at Ridgelines. Comfy plush, but too much geewhizbang stuff.

I have a Hilux with a 2.4L Diesel. These things are better built than their Tacoma counter-parts, and nearly indestructible. After driving around mine for weeks now, I feel like the American market isnt getting the best Toyota pickup in the Tacoma. Sure my 1988 Hilux maybe be slow, but it has good power down low, it has impressive fuel range after filling up the tank with only $23 of diesel, and it just feels more solid all around.

Why doesn't Toyota sell the Tacoma in Australia or Africa?

Australia and Africa have more remote areas and less access to dealerships. Vehicles in those areas are mainly used for utilitarian tasks, plus diesel fuel there means more fuel range and ability to perform those tasks on a regular basis.

Vehicles overseas cost more which means less often they'll be traded in. The Tacoma was built for the North American market because Americans thought the Toyota Hilux/Pickup was too uncomfortable. Hence the Tacoma was made as a comfort truck.

the Hilux is built to be more of a work Truck. In north america work trucks are full-size. Thats why they also have the Tundra.

They're both very similar in capabilities, probably more clearance and approach in the Tacoma OR but you get 340ft/lbs of torque with the hilux diesel.

Not sure if the Hilux includes crawl control.

Yep, this would be the Hilux I'd want.

No people who look at the Tacoma from outside the US are jealous because they can't afford one. Most hiluxs and land cruisers are old a beat to shit because no one can afford a new one.

When I was in Africa and the Middle East no one outside the government had a car or truck newer than 10 years old. Except the oil countries, everyone had lambos and Mercedes

New Hilux? Meh. Not impressed. Much better performing vehicles out there. The taco being one of them.

However, the 70 series land cruiser? I would do dirty things for one of those. Dirty, dirty things.

Diesel and front and rear mechanical lockers. Yes please.

I'll caveat the diesel as the European version. I would never want the newer American diesels because of all the issues.
