That's a stretch. They may show interest until they realize it's powered by a gas engine when they prefer a diesel in a truck. That's why production on the FJ Cruiser only lasted 2 more years around the world after it ended production in the U.S.

There's petrol stations all over. FJ was never popular and completely different argument.

    Both trucks I drove...gas

Bumper, Winch, 315s, Sliders, OME HD lift, Custom rear swingout, roof rack, drawers, way too much to list.
You can find the old Hilux and Landcruisers in Japan for a reasonable price, now that 2016 is over you can start importing 1992 models into the US. Here's a nice example: https://www.tradecarview.com/used_car/toyota/landcruiser+70/19306170/
I work with a guy who had an S13 imported, it wasn't all that expensive getting it shipped to the West coast.

I beg to differ. If people were that jealous of Tacomas overseas, then Toyota would make it a world market truck. But it's only limited to the North American market. The Hilux is the go-to truck in the world.

The way I understand it, the American safety and construction and emission specs are so much different then most of the world that it is actually easier to make a separate model for the American Market then to try to convert the specs. Also, Most American buyers are expecting a bit more space, style, "luxury", and more in almost any vehicle today that tailoring a truck for the U.S. Market makes sense to Toyota, as well as some other car makers, like Ford. You can't buy a Mondeo sedan in America, for instance, but you can in Europe.

If you read my comments the point was that they are too expensive.

Tacomas are built for deep American pockets while the hilux is not which is why the Tacoma will at times differ in engineering such as the transition to the IFS before the hilux.

Compare hilux world sales to Tacoma sales and it's not that impressive.

You don't honestly think the Land Cruisers in Africa are the same breed either do you?

Why do you think North America is dominated by expensive luxury versions?

Dude you said earlier people overseas are jealous of Tacomas which doesn't make sense. People overseas use their Toyota trucks differently than here. The Hilux is a workhorse and the Tacoma is a comfort and recreation truck. It's not about what's expensive. It's about Toyota deciding which regions would benefit from a work horse and comfort truck.

As for the Land Cruiser, we get their 200 series instead of their more utilitarian 70's series. Most other regions offer both a 70's and 200 series. And their 200 series gets a choice of a Diesel.

We just get comfort trucks here in the US. I bought a 1988 Hilux with a diesel and I confirmed how tough and fuel efficient these things are. I just have a hard time believing people overseas would be jealous of recreation/comfort Tacomas with so-so fuel economy and little torque down low to get tasks done day in and day out at brutal environments.

Thank you for basically repeating everything I was implying...

You are still missing the point, the use of the term "jealous" is reference to the difference in both quality of life and earnings. Perhaps it was a poor choice of words.

At the end of the day if both trucks were offered Tacoma would be more expensive. It has nothing to do with "because they use them". The land cruiser I had was no less or more capable it was just a very shitty version of what we have and it was also cheap. It also got like 12mpg as a diesel and had two tanks.

It's obvious you never lived overseas.

You ask how people get things done day to day with their trucks in brutal environments? they do it because the trucks are old, cheap, and easy to repair, nothing more. Most of them are mechanical. People still use Land Rovers yet the saying in Africa is that if you have a Land Rover you'll sleep on the trail or in the bush. Meaning it always breaks...still sells. Tough is relative. Been there done that. You can believe what you like but you will be wrong.

Pretty much why the Hilux was a perfect fit for overseas over a Tacoma. God forbid a CPS censor fails and the nearest dealer is 300-500 miles away.

I have never lived overseas but I have traveled overseas in certain environments where people depend on these vehicles with their lives.

I'm not wrong as I was going off your poor choice of wording. It sucks your Toyota Land Cruiser got such crappy mileage for a diesel. I have no complaints of about the fuel mileage in my Hilux.
