I do not think its wasting your time or your money, I call that preventive maintenance and peace of mind. Well done. I am doing the same thing with my 2016 Honda Civic EX-T, I have changed it at 1000 with Amsoil Signature series 0w20 and I will change it again at 6000 with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0w20 to keep it clean. Then every 5k after that, as will I do with this Tacoma.

Did they change your oil at the 5k , or just the tire rotation and top off fluids?

Changing oil early is like replacing tires at 8/32. *shrug*. Do what makes you happy but don't claim using the full life is BS. Dark oil is meaningless, new oil will be dark in 1500 miles. Get an analysis done and find out the reality.

What oil are you using? 0w20 full syn? What brand, I have no doubt most off the shelf full syns can go 10 to 12k easily, I just want to see what Blackstone has to say at 5k for my piece of mind, if its good after 2 changes, I will up it to 7500 OCIs, then eventually 10k if all looks good.

Certainly plan to . Like I said....its just personal preference I suppose, then when toyota writes it on their website, it makes me think twice about 10k+ OCIs......

Again *which engine*...Toyota site specs 10k for the 6cyl. As does the maintenance guide both in PDF and in hard copy.

Not sure folks are realizing that.

I've not researched that motor. Certainly if Toyota says 5K then that's what I'd go with.

With so many people owning 6 bangers you'll have them thinking that's what you mean if it's not made VERY clear you're talking about some different. I know I've not memorized engine codes.

I'd guess dealer forgot what you have and is mixed up.

...^^^... You would like my ex-bother-in-law oil change procedures ... lol ... He is as close to the "Rainman" as I have ever seen. He was a techno engineer for a German company who invented stuff. He had to retire a few years early because of brain burnout.

Anyway ... he used to carry a case of oil and filters and tools and coveralls in his Suburban all the time ... in case of .. "oil change time". :)

The family story goes like this ... He was driving from NJ to Long Island to visit his sister for Christmas a few years ago. He surpassed his 1,500 max miles a few miles before he got to her house. He continued driving to her house and would not go inside until he put his coveralls on and changed his oil.

I am not the bad ... but I tend to use aircraft maintenance schedule thinking for my truck ... lol ... :)

PS ... Buy my oil on sale at Costco and filters on Amazon and each oil change costs about 30 bucks if everything is on sale ... cheap as an oil test.

I used Mobil 1 10-30 in my 7200 RPM little racer from 40-100k miles, on 10k OCIs. Hit the rev limiter weekly, great compression, very clean inside the motor. Current owner has continued that, still excellent at 150k.

I have used Mobil 10w30 in my Highlander since new in '04, currently 115k, 10k OCIs, and it has a lot of short cycle city miles. If the paint had held up as well as the motor I'd be thrilled. In fact, I may drop the coin on a repaint. Saving 35 large over a new replacement, and it should easily make another 150k.

I use Mobil 1 0-20 in the 4 banger Tacoma. 10k OCI, as long as its under 3 years to get there.

I'd never suggest you base a longer OCI than the OE calls for on anything but a lab test. But if you don't take advantage of the available OCI (that still protects your engine) you're just wasting money, time and resources.

Keeping my resources available for other things in life is what makes me feel good, as long as I'm preserving the functional durability of my ride. Doesn't matter if it's a racer, people appliance or handy little truck. I treat them all well, and equally mechanically.

It doesn't mean I do oil changes based on my emotions or 'peace of mind'.

    On my '01 BMW and '02 4Runner, I was religious about every 5k w/ Mobil 1.

Sold both cars at about 275k and the engines were mechanically sound.

With my '13 Durango and '15 Tacoma, I'll continue with this schedule.

The oil may last to 15k, but I didn't want to take the chance the filter would. Plus, the extra oil changes can't hurt.

    YMMV

Right on man, I got ya. Glad to see the 10k OCIs worked for your truck...I will do a Blackstone at 5k and see what I get, I'm sure it will be fine and have quite a bit of life left too , if its real good, I will try at 7500 and get another sample, if thats good, I will try a 10k OCI, and with Mobil 1 or any full synthetic oil off the shelf, I'm sure theyll be within microns of Amsoil, Pennzoil, Etc..etc.. but hell man....thats a completely different thread all together!!
