    HAM is really strict. If you are talking on the frequencies through repeaters or in town over simplex, the FCC can easily find you. If you're out in the middle of no where with no signal and you're talking over simplex you're fine and can get away with it.

    The test is really easy. Check out hamstudy.org and then go pay $15 for a local test and not risk getting fined for illegal use of the amateur radio bands

    It's about time you got on HAM, Ryan!
    For shitz n gigs, look up HAM foxhunting. There's a whole community of people that dedicate themselves to policing HAM frequencies. People always ask "Well how can they find me?" They make sport of it and can find you pretty easily.
    FWIW, the lower frequencies that most of us use (141-151, weatherman, etc.) when off-road locally are sort of free range and don't get monitored much. It's the higher level frequencies that are monitored more closely, but the handlhelds can't even tune to those frequencies so you really don't need to worry about it too much.
    $15 is a really small investment though and eventually when you move to an installed 50w radio, you'll be glad you have the license. I'm moving to an install soon. For now, an external antenna does wonders for extending the range of that little guy if you were interested.

    X2. I installed a Icom IC-2730 and love it. I was reaching up to 50 miles when I was in Moab on top of all the canyons.

    The handhelds are nice and more preferred when it comes to close range because you can get out and spot while talking but mobile is definitely badass.

    Expensive too..

    Handhelds have their place and they're perfect for it. I carry two in the truck at all times. A lot of my outdoor adventures usually involve me parking the truck out in the middle of nowhere and continuing on foot so I'll strap one to my pack and hand the other one off to whoever is with me. Also great for road trips and long stretches of highway miles between trails. Safer than trying to text "I'm stopping for gas."
