Catch Can for Oil Filter - V6

I haven't seen this on here and sorry if it is a repost, but I found one of the little bunge straps a really easy way to hold a soda can under the oil filter drain spout. Just hook to the tab and wrap around the filter mounting base and hook the other hook on the tab.

 

thats a good idea, i just used the 5/16th tubing and ran it to the ground but +1 on the creativity

I used to actually use the old oil filter to catch the oil. Now I attach a tube and run it to my drain pan on the ground below.

I like the fact that Toyota set it up like this. I've been changing the oil on vehicles since I was a kid, and this truck easily provides the cleanest oil changes I've ever dealt with.

 

I use a Corona bottle. Fits quite well.

FWIW, I had a 2007 Tundra and it was a nightmare to change with the oil filter cartridge & O rings.

Yep, growing up my parents went through a lot of Saturns. Some weren't too bad, but some were absolutely moronic. With most of them, there was no way around draining oil all over other parts when removing the old filter. And since you were draining onto other parts, there wasn't even a focused spot to put a drain pan, it ran all over the place.

 

Changing the oil filter on the 3.4L was no picnic. Man I hated that.

 

My take on this was a little more involved. I added a small inline valve (petcock) like used on a motorcycle. I routed the hose to where my oil drain pan could be used.

 

First service at the dealership and the tech left a water bottle under the hood to catch the oil. My next oil change is free.

I use the smaller empty powerade bottles, fits right in there nicely.

 

Yeah, I just did my 1st oil change and honestly, I found the 5/16" tubing method kind of a pain. I'm going to just use a bottle or cup next time.

 

I have always used a small plastic cup with a piece of coat hanger formed into a hook which holds the cup under the drain. It was the simplest method I could think of.

 

I bought some fuel line (3/8" I think), about 3 ft of it. I attached one end to the nipple under the catch can and ran it along the side of the radiator fan shroud to the bottom of the truck. Fully, extended, the hose will hang down about 4" below the skid plate. I zip tied it to points in the front frame spar so it wouldn't hit anything. At the end I put in a vacuum nipple and cap. When not in use, the hose can be tucked over the skidplate so it rests on top.

All I have to do is grab the hose and let it dangle beneath the truck, move my catch pan, remove the vaccuum cap, and remove the filter.

This really saves all the hand contortions and burning you have to do to get a container under the catch can.

I'll post photos when I start my build thread! Hahah believe it or not my name is actually Satoshi. Not the same one as the grille mod guy, but it'd be hilarious if this mod became the Satoshi Catch Can Mod.

Does the catch cup come from the factory? I want to get one for my toyota land cruiser, it's always a pita taking off the filter and having oil all over my front axle.
I can't even put an oil pan underneath to catch it because my axle housing is right under neath and oil splatters everywhere.

 

First time I changed the oil, I went to Autozone to pick up the oil and filter, then stopped by Taco Bell on the way home. I emptied out the big ass plastic cup that came with my meal and used that, it rests quite nicely right underneath the drain. Been using that same cup ever since, lol. Wifey almost threw it away once

 

I just use a styrofoam cup. It works. Lol.

A 16-oz vitamin water bottle is held in place nicely by the lower water hose. I don't like using hoses cause oil remains inside and makes a mess when you store it, even if stored inside a zip loc bag. I do place a vacuum plug on the nipple so excess oil don't leak after removing the bottle.

 

Red solo cup. Fits like a glove and one of the radiator hoses keeps it from falling. Doing this for 10+ years now.
