Interesting. Have any of your trades included situations like OP's, where there would be money owed if the truck was to be registered?

I traded my 2016 dclb or in earlier this month. 14,000 miles on it ( had it 5 months) and I got 33.5k on trade.

There is absolutely no way that you are required to pay sales tax on a vehicle you already own just because you moved to a different state.

This. If it was purchased and registered in another state you should not have to pay sales tax on it at all.

Good luck getting that kbb is always an overestimate, and at that value hard for the dealer to have any profit on that at all, black book is always closer to correct value. Even so it's still a financial loss no matter how you spin it tax wise, sounds like your trying to convince yourself why you need new.

Everytime I moved to another state and went to register my vehicles I had to prove that I had paid tax on the vehicle. Annnd once in Georgia, the tax I had originally paid was less than GA and I had to pay the difference.

It was many years ago and I don't remember the specifics

Montana. Bought a Chevy Silverado. They traded the Tacoma to their sister Toyota dealer in Missoula MT.

Good luck getting anything close to KBB on trade. Thought about going back to a full size truck back in the Fall. I have a loaded '16 Limited in mint condition garage kept looks like it just came off showroom floor, had less than 3k miles on it. Went to 3 different dealerships including where I bought the truck and best I was offered was $34.5k on trade. Lowest was $32.5k at dealership where I bought the truck.

Can you go to another DMV office? If you bought it as a resident of another state, in another state, and it was already registered in another state... there is no basis for TX to tax you. That'd be nuts. I faced no such issues when I moved two cars from AK to TX.

Is there sales tax on vehicles in Alaska?

I am going to try a different DMV, but I have called several and this seems to be the general consensus

No sales tax in AK. Honestly I had no issues, I just showed the DMV the registrations from AK and it was a non-issue. If you were a Montana resident at time of purchase, it was bought in Montana, and it was registered/plated in Montana prior to you becoming a TX resident, I cannot fathom why they would hassle you besides incompetence.

    - not being able to register vehicle in current state due to mods or problems that were "ok" in the previous state
    - outstanding fees, like the taxes OP mentions

... and who knows what else.

When registering an out-of-province vehicle here in BC, it has to pass inspection according to BC's laws. This very frequently means updating things on the vehicle to comply with our laws. There are also (small) costs involved. If I were a dealer, I'd not even consider taking an out of state vehicle unless I was getting it for pennies or was somehow 100% of being able to off-load it to someone.
