Why can't I find a 4 cylinder Double Cab? May go out of state.

Nevermind the color choice or options, I can't find a 4 cylinder Double Cab in my state. I looked through 7-8 dealership's websites and websites such as autotrader.com, not such model. (Ok, I saw one once). Arizona.

In nearby states such as CA, or UT, I'm able to find what I'm looking for. 4 Cylinder Double Cab 4X2 SR5. I want that "base truck." It's not about what I can afford, but there is something about the "base truck" if you know what I mean.

I read many threads here about I4 vs V6, MPG, power, etc. so I don't want to visit that.

The dealership is pushing me to a V6 off the lot, with discount. But if I want a I4, they can get it, but it won't have any incentives.

    A few questions:

    1. Why don't dealership stock I4 Tacoma Double Cab? I know gas is cheap now.
    2. If I buy it new from out of state, any pitfall I need to be aware of?

Its rare. Who wants a 4cyl double cab?

You can't use MPGs as a buying factor. The V6 gets better MPGs. More power.

You need to order it to get what you want.

Because nobody wants that configuration except a handful of people and fleet truck buyers - and they're more interested in the access cab trucks.

I have a 2.7 DCSB Prerunner. I had to order it, and it took 5 months. When there was a recall on the valve springs for the motor in 2014 or 2015, Toyota told my local dealer that they'd probably not see ANY trucks come in for the work.

They ended up having 3, including mine.

They're the rarest configuration - smallest motor, biggest truck.

Each dealership is allocated a certain number of trucks in a certain number of configurations. Your dealership may have already received and sold the allocated number of I4 Tacomas. In order for them to now get you the I4 you want, they have to "trade" a more desirable V6 equipped Tacoma to get your I4 with another dealership, or alternatively wait until the factory sends them more I4's. They are going to offer incentives on what they have on the lot, not what they have to go find.

If they're offering you a discount why not take it? While the 4cyl motor is more efficient with the extra weight of the double cab it appears as though the v6 would be the better option. per Toyota.com

And the V6 double will be easier to sell down the road.
Buy the V6 enjoy the extra power and resale value.

I'll say this, as this is the configuration I have and only a few others have on TW. Maybe 6 of us in total.

If you're going to keep it completely stock. Stock size tires, included - the 2.7 can be a benefit.

If you plan to add any extra weight, whether it's a slightly larger tire or a shell, get the V6.

Additionally, if you live at elevation, get the V6.

    I speak from experience.

I think direct injection/atkinson cycle makes the 3.5 more efficient.

The quintessential Tacoma to me was a 4 banger double cab.

    No ragrets.

I still get better mileage than a similarly built V6 truck, but I don't have the V6 performance which is why I said in stock form it's great, if it's modified it's not really worth doing.

    1. Most people prefer a higher horsepower to weight ratio.

    2. No. Buy the truck, and take it to a DMV in your state to pay the tax and register it. Call the dealership ahead and ask if they are familiar with selling to an out of state customer.

Whys the V6 rated 1 MPG better highway?
I think that was true with the 2nd gen tacos.

What was your reasoning for going for the 4cyl DC in the first place? Curious. You are right, they are few and far between.

Likely because the 2.7 works harder at that speed than the V6.

Yeah I get that.. Look what I quoted him on. He said the 2.7 gets better MPGs. I was wondering why the 3.5 is rated better.

It was the only option. I considered a V6 DCLB but I really wanted the 2.7. I wanted the 2.7, so I got the biggest truck I could get with it.

That said if the DCSB was a V6 only configuration I'd have agreed to the V6.
