So I got a bad ass fishing kayak, I want to go out on Wednesday but I'm having a hard time transporting it. Does anyone have any tips, I am saving for a roof rack.

Hmmm tough one. I take it the nose wouldn't fit in too far through the back window? With the short bed even more difficult. How long is the kayak?

Time for a shell and/or racks.

Congrats on the new yak! Im into kayak fishing myself.

How long is your kayak? I have a 10' and i just transport it in the bed with the tailgate down. I kiddie corner it and it only hangs off the gate about 1'. I run a single strap to hold it in that runs through the carrying handle on the end of the kayak. I hook the strap to the 2 factory d-rings at the back of the bed. is works well for me but I have a long bed. Not sure what you have

    Enjoy the new gift!

    Short bed, yeah?

I actually transport my 14 footer underneath my rack and RTT with ratchet straps. How you have it in the pic it'll probably scrape the cab or hit it if it was strapped down in that way.

It's 10 feet long, I've been saving for a rack I'm just not quite there yet. Oklahoma is pretty lenient about attaching stuff so I'm thinking just strap it down how it is in the picture.

Unfortunately, your toolbox does not help things, but it may not matter based on boat length. The poster above recommended a receiver hitch bed extender, and that may work for you (really need to know boat length to properly help). I have the long bed, but use 14 foot boats, so have used a rack, but now a trailer. Also depends on your state, Texas requires lighting on things that stick out a certain distance. Do your homework, and decide on your ability, needs, and state laws.

I always steer people toward the Thule Xsporter rack, but it's a bit pricey.
The Trac Rac is the same manufacturer and at least half the cost.
The Thule is adjustable though. 1002161652.jpg
Here is mine, a little hard to see. I can get a better pic tomorrow if you would like.

Or another option is the Yakima version you can buy individually and put one in the bed and one on the cab kind of like this...

Depends on your budget-- You could add a custom rack for $$$

On the cheap, throw something like this on
    http://supwarehouse.com.au/accessories/sunny-king-soft-roof-racks/
    https://www.storeyourboard.com/inflatable-sup-roof-rack-heavy-duty/
Not the coolest thing in the world but they are functional and affordable AND REMOVABLE.

Lastly, there is the ghetto cheap option
2x pool noodles and tiedowns (hey it works too)

These tie downs are great for kayaks, SUP, and surfboards. I use them everywhere.

I would say just get an amigo to help lift the toolbox out (please don't slide it) and then kitty corner the kayak and flag it. Keep the toolbox out until you can afford the rack.

take off the paddle, roll it over, shove the rear of it under your toolbox, let the front sit on top of the tail gate... (being flipped over, the sides keep it stationary from tilting and what not then throw a strap/rope over it and use the two anchor points in the back of the bed. That's how I've always hauled mine.

If your state is lax about it I would leave the tailgate down and throw a strap over it and a flag on the end while you save.

To much wind. Pushing on it the way it is in your first pic.

I bought this It raises up to the top of the tailgate. I slide my kayak up thru my sliding glass window and put a red flag on the tail of the kayak. I don't have to go far so, it works good enough. I do have have a Yakima mount on my trailer if I want to haul it that way.

Would those work with a roll up tonneau? My issue has been trying to find something that is tall enough to carry above the cab safely but also works with the tonneau

What kind of tonneau? But judging by how it mounts in the pick, probably not.

Truxedo TruXport. Looking at the mount pictures now it looks like it won't.

The problem I'm running into is the KB Voodoo, Mob Town, etc. are all too low. I think maybe the KB Voodoo rack is tall enough but that's almost $800 w/ the tonneau mounts.

I do know some are working on a higher bed bars system so I may have to just wait it out. I just would prefer to have it stick up like the Thule system where it has clearance over the cab.
