OME kit without UCA's

Howdy all and Merry Christmas Eve. I'm looking into lift kits for my new '16. I'm leaning more towards the OME kit OMETAC16LKSB. I'm curious if anyone is running this kit without UCA's. I had LR UCAs with my toytec lift on my '15 and I had issues keeping the alignment. It would align great at the shop but it never lasted more than a few weeks. And that is with only city driving. They also started annoyingly squeaking about 6 months after install. Long story short, I'm looking to avoid replacing the stock UCA's.

Also, I'm planning on going with the 4Runner pro wheels and 275/70/17 tires, so if you happen to run this lift and this tire/wheel combo, I'd love to get your input on any rubbing issues.

I'd call ARB/OME, they were super helpful when I was figuring out what springs I needed. I have a 2nd gen but they said I didn't need new UCA's and I was able to get it aligned properly. No issues after 1.5 years with it on.

 

OME tries to make everything straight bolt on without modification. I agree that you should contact them but they will likely say it will be ok with stock UCA

 

Why do people who get TRDs mod? I thought the whole point of paying an extra 5 grand was so you didn't have to?

 

Yea that's why I got the SR5, but in hindsight having an e-locker and A-TRAC might have been worth it even if I ultimately wanted to change the suspension. Planning to put ARB lockers in and re-gear so that's gonna be expensive but I like the process of building up my truck.

 

I have the OME medium kit on 285's stock uca's, 1.25 spacers on stock wheels. They didn't rub until the springs settled. I got the toyteclifts.com top plate spacers and now I'm back to no rubbing...

 

Only way to get a manual transmission and the V6, plus e-locker and maybe some other features not available on the SR5, etc. Everyone shops and purchases vehicles differently, some may have a goal of minimizing costs while others put a premium on certain features available from the factory. But in the end, everyone wants to build the truck just the way to want.

In my previous experience with OME lifts on previous vehicles, I did not require control arms, so I would expect the same out of a Tacoma.

 

Thank you for the input. I didn't think to call them. But I may have to just to chat about this. I'm glad that most here seem to not be running the UCA's.

As far as modding a TRD model, I don't see that extra 5 grand being used on the stock suspension. It's more so in the E locker, the MTS, Crawl control, etc... and the fact that it is all built to work together. I like the idea of having the most capable 4x4 equipment available from the factory and with a warranty. I do agree with you timotom, if I were building a rig like some others have built on here, I'd start with a truck that didn't have all the bells and whistles.

 

I'm at 2.5/2.75 on stock UCAs.

If you're staying under 3", you'll likely be fine. Over 3" and you'll want them.

 

Did you get 2.5" in the front with 885s?

 

I'm on 884s and 1/4" top plate spacers and a lighter configuration than most.

But I'm equivalent to an 885, best as I can tell.

 

I recently installed the OME 886's and kept the stock UCA's. No issues getting it aligned and I'm glad I saved the $$$

 

Mine has had and OME kit since 90 miles. It now has almost 29k on it with stock uppers. I haven't needed different uppers. The
alignment has been "good enough", but could be perfect with more adjustment in the uppers. Just a little more caster would make it
perfect, but it drives pretty dang good at "good enough".
It's running 285/70r17 Cooper STT Pros, on TRD Pro wheels with No Spacer.

The OME kit of perfectly fine with the stock uca's. You might limit the down travel a little but you'll be fine.

I ran that kit and mine aligned fine and worked fine off road (stock uppers).

 

Now that is a good looking rig. Do you have any rubbing? I have the factory mud flaps and would like to keep them. I will be running the same wheel with 275's.

My plan is to get the lifetime alignment at the Toyota of Dallas dealership with this truck. They are about 6 minutes from my house/work so I can easily get my money's worth out of it. Just didn't want it to affect my tire tread life with uneven wear. Thanks for the input!

 

Sure.

Consider the aftermarket UCA a performance upgrade.

For low and mid range suspension setups, they're only really needed if you're lifting more than 3".

Everybody I know with a high performance suspension considers UCA to be an integral part of it.

Most people are in the former group. Get it if you need it. I wouldn't pre order UCAs, and I'd try several alignment shops before deciding UCAs are necessary. Most of the time people "need" them under 3" is because they have a shitty alignment tech.
