IMG_4828.jpg Hey guys. Just went to the dealer today to pick up my 2017 Sport after being prepped and guidepoint and remote starter installed, only to find scratches and swirl marks on both sides of the truck. I didn't see any of this when looking over the vehicle yesterday.before starting the paperwork. Dealer is sending it out to be wet sanded and buffed in the morning. He said from his experience 90 percent of it will come out. I love black and I know it's hard to keep it clean but I have owned other vehicles in black and didn't look like this off the lot. The further you walk away from the truck in the sun the worse it looked. Dealer said if I am not happy they will get me another truck which I appreciated. Any insight to Toyota Black would be appreciated.

Okay, so dealerships tend to put the underpaid young individuals in charge of washing the vehicles ready for pickup. As a result, they don't really care about making sure the paint is in pristine condition leaving the lot. The water they use is probably drained at the end of each day, instead of at the end of every wash. There's no telling when the mit was even washed last. Your truck could have been washed with the same mit that was used on ten other vehicles for all that we know. You did the right thing by pointing it out because now it's costing them more money to fix the issue instead of preventing it from occurring. I say let them fix it and if it doesn't withstand to your standards don't buy.

If the dealer said he would get you a different color I would get any color besides black. I have a black SR5 and it scratches just looking at it wrong. I'm thinking about getting the black heifer coated in Line-X Body Armor. That should do the trick.

No need to wet sand, they're likely sending it out to a local detailer and not fixing the paint themselves, so I'd not fret.

People who get paid to wash cars for a living at a dealership are not at all comparable to a detailer.

Have you waxed the vehicle since purchasing it? If not, you need to use a clear cutting compound to remove the current scratches, then apply a heavy duty wax. I recommend Mequires No 1 and 2. A buffer would be more practical and easier considering the stuff is mildly difficult to remove. Once you're finished, I'd use a quality wax. Something like Ice or Mothers. (has worked for me) I also use hand glaze after washing sometimes to remove new marks. Blacks one of those colors that it's better to do a little at a time, so it doesn't take forever to remove old scratches when trying to detail.

Thanks for the swift replys everyone. I just called my insurance agent and made sure I have insurance on my 2015 until this get resolves. I don't know how the dealer said he will get 90 percent of it and still think I'm gonna be open to taking out. This will be my 3rd Tacoma with this dealer I fully believe they will do the right thing.

Hearing first hand here for those who had black makes me think about that color selection now.

I had a off blue in 13 that swirled easy and then the silver for 15 held up well.

1st time I waxed it was this spring and Meguiar's Cleaner wax took the light scratches out. Then the 1st week of October I put a coat of Trinova Paint Sealant on it. I think it will hold up fine until spring then I'll put another coat of it on or switch to Meguiar's Ultimate paste wax. (Which is a sealer)

use a random orbital polisher and a swirl remover, then wax it. I Have to do our two black porsches once or twice a year no matter how carefully I clean them.

it didnt take them out. It just filled them in. After 1 or 2 washes or rains it will wash out and they will show again.

All new vehicle paints are soft. They're water borne.

If you want maximum ability to work with the paint and small repairs, almost any light colored non metallic is the best choice.

Don't settle for a damaged truck right off the lot. Get a different colour if you have to. Paint damage can be minimized or eliminated, but only at the expense of your truck's clear coat. Save that for when you scratch it yourself.

I've got a black 2016 and love it. Yea it's more work but knew that when I bought it. Personally I don't think there is a prettier color. I haven't had any trouble with the paint and since March I've probably washed her 20 times. Now I am the only one who detailers it and it is garage kept. Get a high quality mit, change the water, use high quality washing liquid and wax and you'll be ok. I also do all my waxing by hand, I don't use a polisher on my truck.

Wet sanding and buffing a brand new truck is taking years off the life of the paint. If I recall, the black, white, red and other non-metallic colors are single stage paints so there's not much to go around. Swirls are super simple to get rid of using a DA polisher that doesn't remove much paint at all. They should always try and use the least amount of correction necessary and it sounds like they are planning on going full out on it first thing. That may make it look great and that's probably what they're going for, but it's not going to help the longevity of the paint.

I really like "Hydro Shine"... It's a polymer and is real good at repelling snow/rain... I found it last fall... I love it.!
Snow just falls off my truck most of the winter..!!

yea thats pretty much wrong. your not taking any life away as long as its done right and you keep it maintained properly going forward. You can have a truck that has never been buffed or anything and the owner never takes care of it will long fade, crack, flake off after the person who had it wet sanded and properly polished out and maintained it over the years
