Just curious but why do you think you'll have to pay sales tax on a vehicle you already own just because you move to a new state?

I moved from Massachusetts to Texas in 2004 and had a 1998 Chevy Silverado and just had to get it inspected and registered.

You shouldn't have to pay sales tax on a vehicle that you already own just because you moved. Sales tax is exactly what it sounds like, Sales Tax, meaning tax on a sale. Some states require a yearly Excise Tax like in mass or Kansas based on the value of the vehicle, but not in Texas.

It should cost $7.00 for an inspection then about $70.00 for registration.

I traded my '16 Limited 4x4 in and they gave me $34,500. That also saved me 3% of that on taxes ($1,035) on the '17 OR I bought. Bought the '17 OR Premium/ Tech for $36,900 + tax ($72 after the credit) tag ($35) and dealer fee ($599). My limited had 15,000 miles on it.

Basically I got a new Off Road for $3,100. I also only paid $36,900 for the Limited when I bought it and work pays me $0.54/mile I drive so in my case it made sense.

I sold my 2016 TRD Sport to a dealer three weeks ago using KBB's Instant Cash Offer program and got $600 less than I paid new (excluding sales tax, license, and the $80 dealer doc fee... obviously had to eat those). CarMax offered $1K less than KBB, but also offered me the KBB program price stating that they'll give whichever of the two is higher. I paid $2K under MSRP new, so the KBB offer was right around $2,600 below my new MSRP.

KBB appears to heavily favor the TRD Sport for some reason given that they show trade in on TRD Off Road models to be around $2K less than comparable TRD Sport models, but it might be worth a try. I definitely didn't expect the KBB offer to be the best I'd find.

Edit: On second thought, this would completely eliminate the benefit of a trade unless a Toyota dealer happens to participate in the KBB program...

Just do it. You only live once.

I've owned two 2016's. Got one. Didn't like it. Got a different one.

It's just money. You gotta be happy.

Ya know, even though we don't pay sales tax, we do have that regressive (and expensive) annual registration fee that is scaled on age of vehicle.

I itemize, and I'm pretty certain I write that down each year.

Depending on how it's classified, you may not have to pay a new tax on that portion.

Sounds like funny dealer math. You got a new TRD off-road for $3100......+the cost of the vehicle you traded in unless you got that one for free.

Many states make you pay sales tax twice by not calling it a sales tax.

Here in GA it's called the Ad Valorem tax and is really a road use tax.

You will get soaked by it any time a vehicle changes registration, including giving a vehicle to a family member (unless the vehicle is older than 1975 or so).

Current rate is 7% of retail value, which they determine by looking at KBB, NADA, and Edmunds and then choosing the highest suggested retail value from the 3.

It has put a serious dent in leasing vehicles in this state because when you lease it, you pay the full tax, not just on the amount you leased it for.

For example, if you leased a $40k Tacoma for 3 years, you will have to pay $2800 in taxes either up front or rolled into the payments.

At the end of the lease, if you decide that you like it and want to keep it, you will again pay 7% of the highest retail value since it will change registration again.

It was all sounding nice and rational up to that last statement about sales taxes. I guess they changed it since 2009. I would have been pissed. Feels illegal.

If you didn't like your first '16, what made you buy a 2nd one?

What? They had identical purchase prices... so yea I drove it for 10-months and 15,xxx miles for $3k. Basically leased it for $300/month.

If you go to TxDMV.gov and look at downloads --> motorists --> publications, you can get to the registration manual (Registration Manual ). The tax range mentioned seems to come from "Section 5.3 County Emissions Chart" and Table 5.1 specifically. It is remarkably unclear, as the third row of the table implies that for new residents of all counties, the tax is a $90 "use tax" if an out-of-state title is presented. The first row implies a different tax for the same situation. It's a choose your own adventure book.

EDIT: Row three is unique in calling out new residents with out-of-state titles... I would argue that one with them until you are blue in the face. $90 use tax.

At the end of the day, it's all up the what the county clerk says, after you challenge her on the double tax. The rest doesn't matter. I say, with the incredible resale of the Tacoma, see if you can trade it without taking a loss over what you paid, minus a reasonable amount of use you got out of the truck. If it was a Chrysler 200, you'd be screwed. With the Tacoma, I think you can just trade the thing, get a year newer truck, and possibly wash out the difference. Plus avoid the whole argue with the tax office lady scenario. That never goes well. And you end up with a new truck.

Yes, if you actually want a new truck that seems like an easy way to go with the Tacoma. I just felt compelled to look into it a bit further since I originally said it was a non issue (which it was in Fort Bend in 2009).
