I professionally detailed for years and while you're technically right with regards to the bold, the problem is it usually isn't, especially when talking about dealerships doing it.

I've had to correct terrible wet sand and polish jobs where, upon measuring the paints depth, found upwards of 5-10 microns of paint removed in random sections where they went after it hard and still ended up leaving horrible holograms that needed further correction. A good DA job usually doesn't even register a single micron of paint removed.

Holograms are 99% done by some rookie who picks up a rotary and has no idea what to do with it. Yes a DA especially with the new stuff these days. i use the long throw 21mm machines and they cut much better and faster then the old DA that are only 8mm throw like the Porter cable and Griots machine. I have a griots as my backup and for using small 3" pads. The fact the dealer wants to send it out for wet sanding on marks that will probably come out in 10min with a typical DA and a decent pad and some HD adapt shows typical they dont know wtf they are doing and I bet the body shop they send it to which in 90% of the time has NO clue how to properly buff out paint and will be installing holograms all over the paint.

Great insight guys. I didn't think about losing the clear coat and possibly effecting the paint down the road. I still can't believe the swirls that were clearly seen right when the white protective coating was removed. But they did roll this truck out of the detailing bay so their own hands had to do it. I just can't see a Toyota plant let this go with scratches on it.

nothing new. unless you are there to get it off the truck and remove the plastic yourself. they will muck it up. My mustang GT I bought in 2010 was black and the paint on it was sooo trashed from the lot guys cleanign snow off it with probably a damn broom. It took me ALOT of work to make the paint perfect. but in the end you can get this look with a DA no wet sanding this was from SERIOUS defects.
Notice perfect paint in the sun

then I fixed it for him with a regular 8mm griots machine before the long throw machines came out

I love black trucks. I'll probably trade my 16 in for an 18 in black.

That's awesomeness right there. That's what I expected to see when picking her up today. Only see something that was not perfect. Again appreciate the insight.

    @16TacomaSport great work!

Here's a comparison I have showing what can be done with a simple paint correction using a DA and relatively mild compounds on soft black paint. Minimal paint removal.

    I had a black 2016,

First day i pick it up the dealer runs it through their fancy car wash i noticed swirls and light scratches. Nothing major ..easy to buff.. but definitely noticeable on a shinny black truck.

But i get "free car washes for life" so why not? i thought ok maybe it wasnt the carwash so i run it through again two weeks later like a dumbass and sure enough more scratches and swirls.

Upon receiving my quicksand 17 i made sure they did not wash the truck. I will i never run my vehicles through any robotic car wash bullshit. Every time i see a car going through one of those now the picture that comes to mind is a fresh log being sucked into a shredder.

    Good luck.

Let me give you an example, rag is used to dry hood, dropped on the floor, picked up then the corner panel, wheels, window then doors. Disaster.

Toyota "Black" paint is completely flat. No metallic or flake at all. You can breathe on flat black and it will scratch. Black on Range Rover, Mercedes, BMW, etc is a much higher quality paint and more resilient to scratches. When I first sat in a 2017 Tacoma a month ago the one at the dealer was black. It was brand new and already had scratches all over it and that was the best the truck was ever going to look. If you are OCD get white or Silver Sky. I have owned black cars and never will again unless its a lease.... Cheers dude.

BMW black is very soft as well. Brand doesnt mean anything with its quality and hardness. Porsche black is one of the SOFTEST paints out there. I have heard from many that it is a nightmare to work with and to finish down properly. This coming from detailers that are very well known in the industry not some shop jockey.

I cringe at the thought of them wet sanding that truck lol! Good luck! If it were me, I would polish it out and glass coat it. I'll never own a black vehicle again unless it's given to me.

Ok talked to dealer first thing this morning. Told him I can't take the truck after wet sanding and thinking it overnight and getting information here. The dealer apologized and we are switching colors to white or silver. Looks like I have to wait till after the holidays but that's fine with me to get a better product.

So you like the groit's ? Did you use the groit's compounds too? Was considering that or Mcguires. Thanks

I haven't really used Griot's, I usually reach for Meguiars 100/205 or Menzerna FG400 as my DA polishes with a Flex 3401.
