For a runner I'd be looking at a v6.

I do fine with the 22re with only essentials in the bed, but a runner would need more than what simply regearing to 5.29's can offer. Especially with 35's.

In 8 years I'll probably have run through another 6 cars. There's no way I can plan something so far in advance.

But starting a project with your son when he's around 12-14 would be a great idea, and he would have to set goals to make sure it's ready for him to drive by the time he's 16. Plus he will learn so much about automotive, and possibly fabrication. That can set him up pretty well for the future.

 

I 100% agree with that sentiment. The last thing you want is for him to be your avg. 3rd gen tacoma owner who doesn't own a tool kit and likes paying $90/hr labor. Especially in the world of off-roading. Your shit never brakes down right next to a cell phone tower.

My dad was a long-haul trucker and didn't have the time to teach me those things, but I damn well started learning as soon as I started driving and was too broke to pay somebody else to do my shit for me.
