OMG Which tires should I buy? (pics included!)

Forgot what I paid, but nobody here has mentioned Duratracs. Price always is important, but after the up-front cost, years down the road I never am hurt by the initial blow. Last set I had lasted 65k miles. I'm from the Fort & have had two sets on my rig. Always done well in snow/ice/mud & dirt.

I have the Hankooks, I live in Reno, Tahoe area si I see snow. I go hunting often so I see snow on and offload quite often. So far they haven't let me down. If you lose it and let off the throttle they are very good about grabbing back up. They advertise that the tread is designed to throw out material that is stuck, and it does do it, maybe not as much as they sell it but if you look at the tread you can see it. (I have 295/70r17 size)
although they aren't crazy good in the mud(duh, they are a/t 's) so I will probably go back to m/t's after these wear out..

 

Hankook is my overall favorite car tire. I've had 2 sets on my Corolla and in the rain and regular driving they perform great. Glad to hear they do well with truck tires!

 

It was between the hankooks and the nitto's when purchasing.
I had ditto m/t's on before so its hard to compare in that way, but I wanted to try another brand just to test the waters. The hankooks work greta for what they are meant for, but i realize now that I do use the mud part of mud terrains more than I thought, that's the only place these suffer, but I have never aired down that much so i'm sure they would do better in mud and the sloppy stuff if I did

 

The grabber 2's look similar to a KO2 tread pattern without the flashy sidewall. If you don't care about looks try them.

 

I just put on cooper st maxx. I know they are more then what you want to spend but they are doing great in the snow I'm in OR so no stranger to it. Out of the one your looking at the hankook look kind of like the toyo open country at2 and I know those perform well in snow too. That would be my choice with your options.

 

After extensive research I landed on this tire. Being from AK I know how important a good tire is. It's an expensive tire, but you really get what you pay for in this scenario.

This is a great Colorado tire - I'm just a half hour south of you. Once I bought these I started noticing how many people in the area have them on their trucks. I've been very happy with them the last three years and my next set will be the same tire in 35s.

 

100 reviews and the Grabber AT2 is still at the top of the charts "Meets the severe snow service requirements of the RMA and RAC"

 

E-load-range tires will be a lot heavier and will kill MPGs. They are also stiffer and may affect the ride quite a bit, from what I have read. They usually have stronger sidewalls, which may be better for hard-core offroading, if that's important to you. For most people, S load range is fine.

 

4 WD magazine still actually has the Hankooks at the top for MT's. heard they are great in snow. I had the grabbers on my FJ and I thought they were garbage in snow. Always seemed to be in 4WD because in 2WD it was bad in snow.

 

Of the tires you suggested I would get the Cooper AT3. I have the ST Maxx on my truck, but it it was more of a daily driver I would have gotten the AT3.

 

If your not pressed for needing them right now buy one or two a week.

Um, what? The most aggressive AT tire with the largest lugs is quiet? Not from what I hear in my buddies trucks running them. They aren't loud but you can hear them and they have quieter trucks (new GM full size trucks and suv's).

Worth the price? Part of the reason they get so much flak is because they are over priced and over rated, many only buy them for the looks. Can find better options at a much better price point that will out perform them.

OP, out of those if snow is the biggest concern I have heard great things about the ATW as they are designed more for snow.

My cousin lives in Springs and he asked me about tires for his Tacoma and didn't care for the aggressive AT looked but wanted good performance, recommended the AT3's and he is really happy with them. Not loud, good road manners and does well off road and in the snow for a great price.

Also if you like the more aggressive look as the others have mentioned the General AT2 is a top choice and well tested by magazines. Highly rated, great in the snow for an AT and in the SL version you should still get 16/32 of tread depth which is 3-4 tenths more than most tires (that is a big factor for me). Good warranty and better traction and wear with the deaper tread. That is probably what I will put on my truck less.

Who ever said mud tires are great in the snow is wrong. They are good in one type of snow, deep stuff. They are bad in light snow or packed snow/ice (way too much lug spacing to properly grab the road with all the voids), stay away unless it is a trail rig that will see the deep stuff.

Good luck OP. I always look for value when shopping and it sounds like you do to. Highest prices almost always doesn't equal best, marketing usually drives that and the higher prices that go with it...

Just by the tread pattern for snow, I would go with the falkens or the coopers.

I just bought Nitto Grappler G2 for my TRD Pro 4runner wheels (265/70/17). $149 ea. I'll have them installed Thursday. I was gonna do the BFG KO2's....but won't be off road that often in the 4runner. Decided to try out a P rated A/T tire.

 

But do they look this good?

Of your choices, I have experience with the Hankook and was extremely impressed with them compaired to others like Toyo for example but they were 37s on a diesel quad cab.
