    Lenses are like Tacomas... good ones hold their value, or even increase in value. Companies like to replace lens models with new versions and most of the time those new versions wind up being worse in quality that the originals. Think second gen Tacos vs. turd gen Tacos (sorry, but it's true!). I could sell the lenses I have and get my money back and then some, but I'm going to hang onto them for when the photog bug bites again.

    My advice would be to avoid interchangeable lens camera systems if you want to control spending on photog equipment. There's always "one more lens" that you have to have to meet your needs. The newer generation compact system cameras are an excellent alternative to DSLRs and multiple lenses. They've really upped the sensor size and quality over the last decade, and costs are competitive across brands.

    I hardly use the big cameras anymore... my phone is always in my pocket and when I want nicer pictures I reach for my humble little Sony RX100 that only weighs 10 ounces. A Sony RX10 would be a nice middle ground camera from compacts to full blown DSLRs that wouldn't require changing lenses. Cannon and Nikon have introduced competing models if you prefer their controls and outputs, and I think they may be cheaper.

    I use Lightroom and I love it.

    That's a nice intro kit for sure, and should meet your needs well if you don't need more zoom range.

    I don't think I will? My main goal is wide angle landscape when travelling, some action shots on the trails, nighttime long exposures when camping, and that is really about it. Nothing like wildlife photography or anything that would need a long zoom.
